Role Context
The Surveyor supports engineering supervision by providing independent verification of the dimensional accuracy of infrastructure works throughout construction. Working alongside the Resident Engineer, Assistant Resident Engineer, contractors, and client representatives, the role helps prevent costly alignment and elevation errors before works are completed or concealed. Accurate survey control, reliable field records, and timely identification of discrepancies are central to maintaining project quality and ensuring roads, utilities, structures, and associated civil assets are built in their correct positions.
Key Responsibilities
- Review contract drawings, specifications, survey requirements, and authority standards before carrying out verification activities.
- Establish, inspect, and maintain horizontal and vertical control points, benchmarks, and traverse networks across the project site.
- Coordinate with contractor survey teams to confirm benchmarks, control information, and layout data before construction begins.
- Verify setting-out coordinates, alignments, elevations, and dimensions for roads, structures, wet utilities, dry utilities, chambers, ducts, and related infrastructure.
- Check excavation formation levels and monitor backfilling and compacted layers against approved grades and allowable tolerances.
- Confirm utility routes, chamber locations, duct positions, cover levels, and horizontal alignments before works are covered.
- Undertake joint field measurements with contractor and client representatives for quantity verification, payment assessment, and handover records.
- Review topographic surveys and as-built information to ensure completed works are accurately represented in submitted drawings.
- Check that survey instruments are calibrated, maintained, and used in accordance with project QA and QC procedures.
- Maintain field books, measurement records, survey reports, coordinate data, and inspection documentation for traceability.
- Support the Resident Engineer and Assistant Resident Engineer when assessing survey discrepancies and construction deviations.
- Identify incorrect setting-out information early and report significant differences before affected works proceed.
- Assist in resolving survey interfaces between separate construction packages, utilities, structures, and contractors.
- Verify completed levels and positions before approval of covering, backfilling, or subsequent construction activities.
- Confirm contractor surveying activities follow approved method statements, inspection procedures, and project requirements.
- Observe Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements during field activities and elevate unsafe surveying practices when identified.
Ideal Profile
- Diploma or degree in surveying, civil engineering, geomatics, or a closely related discipline.
- Practical surveying experience on road, utility, infrastructure, or major civil construction projects.
- Strong understanding of horizontal and vertical control systems, benchmarks, traverses, coordinates, elevations, and construction tolerances.
- Proven ability to verify contractor setting-out and identify discrepancies between field conditions and approved design information.
- Experience with topographic surveys, as-built surveys, earthworks measurement, utility alignment, and structural positioning.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, survey plans, and construction documentation accurately.
- Familiarity with quality control procedures and calibration requirements for surveying instruments.
- Comfortable working on active construction sites and coordinating with engineers, inspectors, contractors, and client representatives.
- Clear documentation habits with the ability to maintain dependable field records and survey reports.
- Strong awareness of site safety practices and the risks associated with surveying around construction operations.
