Role Context The Senior Welding Engineer will provide specialist technical leadership across fabrication, construction, and marine activities where welding quality, metallurgy, material compatibility, and procedure qualification directly influence structural integrity and project delivery. The role combines project execution with technical development. Responsibilities extend from preparation of welding execution plans and qualification programs to consumable selection, failure investigation, welding automation, workforce development, vendor review, and customer approvals. The engineer will also mentor less experienced personnel and help maintain technical alignment with current welding codes, standards, and industry developments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide welding engineering deliverables and metallurgical support to fabrication, marine, construction, and project teams.
  • Develop Project Welding Execution Plans defining required welding procedures, qualification schedules, consumable quantities, and supporting materials.
  • Establish priorities for welding engineering activities based on project schedules and fabrication requirements.
  • Monitor qualification progress and adjust execution priorities where project conditions change.
  • Define welding procedure requirements for different materials, joints, processes, thicknesses, and service conditions.
  • Coordinate preparation and qualification of Welding Procedure Specifications.
  • Support Procedure Qualification Record activities and associated testing requirements.
  • Obtain customer and Certifying Authority review and approval for project welding procedures.
  • Maintain clear records of technical comments, approvals, and qualification status.
  • Coordinate with external test laboratories for mechanical, metallurgical, and other testing of welding qualification coupons.
  • Review test results and confirm compliance with project and applicable code requirements.
  • Provide metallurgical consultation to Fabrication and Marine operating groups.
  • Support resolution of welding, metallurgy, materials, and quality-related technical issues.
  • Investigate weld failures and determine contributing metallurgical or process factors.
  • Recommend fit-for-purpose corrective actions based on technical evidence.
  • Support development and qualification of repair welding procedures where required.
  • Select welding electrodes and consumables based on mechanical properties, chemical composition, corrosion performance, weldability, and economic considerations.
  • Review welding consumable demand against stock and projected project requirements.
  • Coordinate actions to prevent shortages of critical welding consumables.
  • Review material control information, project schedules, and consumable estimates when updating the welding execution strategy.
  • Maintain technical awareness of developments in welding processes, materials, consumables, equipment, and automation.
  • Liaise with technical organizations and specialist agencies regarding welding technology developments.
  • Participate in Research and Development initiatives identified by the Welding Engineering group.
  • Support development and deployment of automatic and mechanized welding systems.
  • Evaluate opportunities to improve productivity, quality, repeatability, and welding performance through automation.
  • Provide technical support during trials and implementation of new welding methodologies.
  • Manage technical activities associated with the welding school facility.
  • Support training and qualification of welders and other fabrication personnel.
  • Promote improved workmanship and consistent application of approved welding practices.
  • Guide Welding Engineers on codes, standards, project specifications, and day-to-day technical matters.
  • Mentor trainee welding engineers and support development of their practical welding engineering knowledge.
  • Review vendor documentation related to welding engineering and confirm technical compliance.
  • Identify deviations, technical risks, and documentation gaps requiring clarification.
  • Support bid-stage reviews of customer welding specifications and project requirements.
  • Summarize key welding obligations, restrictions, and technical risks during tender preparation.
  • Identify bid qualifications and clarifications associated with welding requirements.
  • Estimate project welder qualification and welding procedure qualification needs.
  • Assess expected welding consumable requirements during proposal development.
  • Identify specialist equipment, testing, resources, or technical support needed for project execution.
  • Develop familiarity with Engineering Critical Assessment based acceptance criteria for applications where ECA is required.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces with QC and NDT Engineers regarding weld inspection, acceptance, and repair requirements.
  • Work with Project Management Teams and Field Engineers to resolve welding issues affecting fabrication or construction progress.
  • Liaise with customers, client representatives, Certifying Authorities, and specialist technical agencies.
  • Maintain accurate records of welding procedures, qualifications, technical decisions, testing, and approvals.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in welding engineering practices, fabrication productivity, and technical quality.
Ideal Profile
  • Master 's degree in Welding is required.
  • Bachelor 's degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related four-year Engineering discipline.
  • International Welding Engineer or European Welding Engineer qualification is relevant to the position.
  • Minimum 5 years of directly related experience in Welding Engineering, Metallurgy, or Materials within fabrication or construction environments.
  • Strong understanding of welding processes, procedure development, and qualification requirements.
  • Experience developing Welding Procedure Specifications and supporting qualification programs.
  • Knowledge of metallurgical behavior associated with welding and heat-affected zones.
  • Ability to evaluate welding consumables based on mechanical, chemical, corrosion, and weldability requirements.
  • Practical experience supporting fabrication or marine operations.
  • Ability to investigate welding failures and develop technically justified corrective actions.
  • Experience working with test houses on welding qualification testing.
  • Understanding of customer and Certifying Authority approval processes.
  • Strong knowledge of welding codes, standards, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Experience reviewing vendor welding documentation.
  • Familiarity with mechanized or automatic welding systems is beneficial.
  • Ability to support Research and Development activities involving welding technology.
  • Experience training, coaching, or mentoring welding personnel and junior engineers.
  • Strong technical communication skills for interaction with customers, QC, NDT, Field Engineering, and project teams.
  • Welding Inspection qualification is preferred.
  • Total Quality Management education is advantageous.
