Role Context
The Welding Engineer will support project welding activities by developing welding procedures, maintaining welder qualification programs, reviewing customer specifications, preparing welding qualification plans, supervising procedure qualification records, and ensuring welding work complies with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and construction requirements. The role requires practical knowledge of welding engineering, metallurgy, electrode and consumable selection, joint design, NDT awareness, welding documentation, and fabrication support within oil and gas project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop project welding procedures that comply with applicable design, engineering, construction codes, standards, and project specifications.
- Maintain the project welder qualification program and ensure qualification records remain accurate and up to date.
- Review customer drawings and specifications to identify material requirements, welding requirements, and required WPS and PQR documentation.
- Select electrodes and welding consumables based on project requirements, weld integrity, material compatibility, and fabrication needs.
- Estimate welding consumable quantities required for assigned projects.
- Source materials required for WPS and PQR qualification activities.
- Determine suitable joint designs in line with codes, standards, construction needs, and welding process requirements.
- Support optimization of welding processes to improve quality, productivity, and project execution efficiency.
- Apply code and specification requirements to proposed welding procedure specifications.
- Develop project-specific and task-specific welding qualification execution plans.
- Prepare and submit WPS and PQR packages for project approval.
- Conduct toolbox talks and welding kick-off sessions to communicate project welding requirements clearly.
- Qualify welding procedures and welder qualifications through proper execution of welding plans.
- Supervise PQR activities on site and witness required testing at laboratories.
- Prepare weld procedure specifications and related technical documentation.
- Review welder qualification tests and approve supporting documentation.
- Assess production weld testing requirements and ensure testing is completed on time.
- Consult with customer engineers and production supervisors on welding, metallurgical, and fabrication problems.
- Support resolution of welding and metallurgical issues by identifying practical and technically acceptable solutions.
- Assist in the development of automatic welding systems and improved welding methodologies when required.
- Supervise or monitor work at the metallurgical laboratory.
- Support welding school activities and help ensure welding training aligns with project and workmanship requirements.
- Supervise welder training activities to improve workforce capability and welding quality.
- Review vendor welding documents for compliance with project requirements, codes, and specifications.
- Coordinate with welding school supervisors, production supervisors, certifying authorities, customers, and project teams.
- Support continuous improvement in welding engineering practices, qualification processes, and fabrication execution.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in welding or metallurgy within the fabrication and construction industry.
- Practical knowledge of welding procedures, welding qualifications, metallurgy, materials, fabrication methods, and construction requirements.
- Strong understanding of WPS, PQR, welder qualification, welding consumables, joint design, and welding process control.
- Ability to interpret customer drawings, specifications, codes, standards, and project welding requirements.
- Welding technology knowledge is preferred.
- Understanding of NDT techniques is preferred.
- Welding inspection qualification is preferred.
- Experience working with laboratories, production supervisors, welding schools, customer engineers, and certifying authorities is advantageous.
- Good technical judgment with the ability to analyze straightforward welding problems and recommend suitable solutions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with moderate guidance while building deeper knowledge of company procedures, customer requirements, fabrication processes, and project execution standards.
