This position is ideal for an experienced welding professional with strong knowledge of codes, standards, welding technology, materials behavior, project execution requirements, and fabrication quality support.
Role Context
The Senior Welding Engineer will support welding engineering deliverables, project welding execution planning, procedure qualification, consumable selection, metallurgical consultation, vendor document review, and welding development activities across fabrication and marine operations. The role requires practical and technical expertise in welding engineering, metallurgy, materials, qualification testing, automatic and mechanized welding systems, welding school support, and coordination with customers, certifying authorities, technical agencies, quality teams, operations, and project management teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide welding engineering deliverables and support development projects, technical tasks, and operational requirements.
- Provide metallurgical consultative support to fabrication, marine, operations, field engineering, and project teams.
- Develop the project welding execution plan, including weld procedure scope, qualification schedule, electrode quantities, and material requirements.
- Establish project priorities linked to schedules and review progress against welding engineering deliverables.
- Coordinate review and approval of project weld procedures through communication with customers and certifying authorities.
- Work with welding engineering and welding department teams to execute research and development goals, process improvements, and technical development projects.
- Maintain contact with technical groups and external agencies to stay updated on welding technology, materials, and industry developments.
- Coordinate with testing laboratories for welding qualification coupon testing and related technical documentation.
- Lead the technical selection of electrodes based on physical properties, chemical properties, corrosion resistance, weldability, project requirements, and cost effectiveness.
- Conduct regular reviews of welding consumable requirements against availability to ensure project needs are met.
- Review project schedules, material control reports, and welding consumable estimates to identify changes needed in the welding execution plan.
- Guide welding engineers on day-to-day technical matters and mentor trainee welding engineers on codes, standards, project specifications, and welding requirements.
- Assist in resolving metallurgical, welding, and quality-related issues by investigating root causes and recommending fit-for-purpose solutions.
- Support the development and implementation of automatic and mechanized welding systems.
- Manage the welding school facility to support workforce training, welding methodology improvement, and good workmanship practices.
- Review vendor documents related to welding engineering, consumables, equipment, procedures, and technical requirements.
- Support bid-stage activities by reviewing customer specifications, summarizing requirements, identifying bid qualifications, and preparing clarifications.
- Identify project welder qualification needs, procedure qualification requirements, consumable requirements, and special execution needs during tender and project phases.
- Develop understanding of engineering critical assessment based acceptance criteria for specific project applications.
- Liaise with fabrication and marine operations managers, discipline managers, project management teams, customers, field engineers, QC teams, NDT engineers, client representatives, certifying authorities, and technical agencies.
- Support compliance with project guidelines, company procedures, customer specifications, and welding discipline policies.
- Share welding expertise with less experienced colleagues and contribute to continuous improvement within the welding discipline.
Ideal Profile
- Master's degree in Welding is preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- IWE or EWE qualification in Welding Engineering may also be considered.
- Minimum 5 years of directly related experience in welding engineering, metallurgy, or materials within the fabrication or construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of welding procedures, welding qualifications, welding consumables, metallurgy, fabrication methods, and project execution requirements.
- Experience supporting fabrication, marine, offshore, construction, or oil and gas projects.
- Ability to develop project welding execution plans and coordinate weld procedure approvals.
- Strong understanding of codes, standards, customer specifications, certifying authority requirements, and project quality expectations.
- Experience working with test houses, qualification coupons, vendor documentation, and welding consumable control.
- Ability to investigate welding, metallurgical, and quality-related problems and recommend technically sound solutions.
- Knowledge of automatic or mechanized welding systems is advantageous.
- Welding inspection qualification is preferred.
- TQM education is preferred.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to liaise with clients, certifying authorities, technical agencies, operations teams, QC teams, and engineering groups.
- Ability to mentor junior welding engineers and support workforce development through welding training initiatives.
