Role Context
The Senior Structural Engineer will support the management of bridge, viaduct, and tunnel assets through both active construction supervision and long-term maintenance activities. The position combines structural engineering judgment with condition assessment, defect diagnosis, rehabilitation planning, technical review, and site leadership. By identifying deterioration mechanisms and selecting appropriate preventive, corrective, rehabilitation, or reconstruction measures, the role will help extend asset service life while maintaining safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Report to the Resident Engineer and support supervision of bridge, viaduct, tunnel, and associated structural works.
- Assist with structural maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and reconstruction activities.
- Maintain close coordination with senior client representatives and ensure clear technical communication throughout project delivery.
- Coordinate with structural engineers, inspectors, surveyors, QAQC personnel, and other members of the supervision team.
- Review shop drawings, design proposals, method statements, material submittals, and structural technical documentation.
- Prepare technical comments and correspondence for review by the Resident Engineer.
- Assess proposed construction and maintenance methods for compliance with approved specifications and engineering requirements.
- Review structural material selections and supporting technical documentation.
- Analyze laboratory results, inspection findings, and engineering reports related to structural works.
- Conduct site visits and structural inspections with engineering and quality teams.
- Evaluate bridge and tunnel condition and identify signs of deterioration or structural distress.
- Investigate likely causes of defects and deterioration.
- Recommend preventive, corrective, rehabilitation, or reconstruction measures based on condition findings.
- Support operation and maintenance planning for bridge and tunnel assets.
- Apply bridge maintenance management principles when prioritizing inspection findings and required interventions.
- Direct and monitor the work of engineers, inspectors, and surveyors assigned to structural activities.
- Provide technical guidance during construction and maintenance operations.
- Convene and chair coordination meetings with contractors, subcontractors, authorities, and other relevant parties.
- Coordinate structural interfaces with service authorities where required.
- Assist the Resident Engineer with preparation and issuance of site instructions.
- Maintain accurate inspection, maintenance, construction, and technical records.
- Support preparation of detailed engineering reports and high-level management reports.
- Prepare or contribute to weekly and monthly project progress reports.
- Monitor implementation of project safety procedures and participate actively in site HSE activities.
- Ensure structural works are carried out in accordance with approved quality requirements.
- Verify the completeness and accuracy of structural as-built drawings.
- Maintain records required for final completion and asset handover.
- Coordinate handover of completed structural works to relevant operating or service authorities.
- Support contractors in obtaining final clearances related to structural works.
- Use engineering software and digital tools to support structural assessment, documentation, and reporting.
- Apply advanced AI-enabled tools where appropriate to assess inspection and maintenance data, identify trends, maintain records, and improve reporting.
Ideal Profile
Candidates should hold a bachelor 's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an accredited university and bring extensive experience across structural design, construction supervision, inspection, and maintenance.
- Minimum 15 years of experience involving bridges and tunnels.
- Strong background in bridge design, construction, inspection, and maintenance.
- Practical experience in tunnel supervision and maintenance activities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of bridge and tunnel operation and maintenance requirements.
- Experience conducting structural inspections and condition assessments.
- Ability to identify deterioration mechanisms and determine appropriate engineering treatments.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance, corrective repairs, rehabilitation, and reconstruction strategies.
- Familiarity with bridge maintenance management systems.
- Strong capability in reviewing method statements and technical proposals.
- Experience assessing material selections and technical submittals.
- Ability to interpret laboratory results, structural reports, and inspection data.
- Working knowledge of structural engineering design and construction processes.
- Familiarity with relevant local and international design codes.
- Experience producing detailed technical reports and executive-level summaries.
- Proficiency with structural engineering, maintenance, and construction software packages.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Strong technical writing capability.
- Gulf-region experience in bridge, tunnel, and infrastructure supervision is preferred.
- UAE or GCC engineering consultancy experience is advantageous.
- Ability to use advanced digital and AI-based tools for inspection and maintenance data analysis is beneficial.
- Valid UAE driving license is preferred.
