The Senior Engineer - Risk-Based Inspection establishes a structured link between equipment risk, inspection frequency, observed condition and appropriate integrity action. Rather than relying only on fixed inspection intervals, the role considers failure probability, operational consequences, degradation history and current equipment condition. This risk-based approach allows inspection resources to be directed toward the assets presenting the greatest threat while avoiding unnecessary intervention on lower-risk equipment. The position also strengthens long-term plant reliability by converting inspection findings, operating deviations and failure investigations into practical improvement plans. Accurate assessment and disciplined follow-up help prevent equipment loss, support safe operating decisions and maintain stable production.
Key Responsibilities
- The engineer will manage risk-based inspection activities, integrity assessments and technical assurance requirements for static equipment throughout the plant.
- Develop, maintain and apply risk-based inspection processes for assigned static equipment.
- Ensure inspection planning complies with company requirements, approved procedures and applicable international standards.
- Establish inspection priorities according to equipment criticality, failure probability and potential operational consequences.
- Review available design, operating, maintenance and inspection information before completing risk assessments.
- Identify equipment requiring immediate inspection, additional monitoring or integrity improvement.
- Recommend appropriate inspection intervals based on verified risk and equipment-condition information.
- Document risk-based inspection assumptions, findings and recommended actions in a traceable format.
- Update equipment risk assessments when operating conditions, damage mechanisms or inspection results change.
- Verify that inspection plans remain aligned with actual plant conditions and asset-integrity objectives.
- Prepare risk-based inspection reports for technical management and relevant operating stakeholders.
- Communicate critical equipment risks clearly and recommend suitable control measures.
- Monitor the completion of approved inspection activities against established schedules.
- Highlight delayed inspections or overdue integrity actions that could increase operational exposure.
- Review inspection findings to determine whether equipment remains fit for continued service.
- Assess wall-loss information, cracking indications, corrosion patterns and other reported deterioration.
- Evaluate whether identified damage remains within acceptable engineering limits.
- Recommend additional examination where available inspection evidence is insufficient for a reliable conclusion.
- Support Fitness-for-Service evaluations when equipment defects or degradation require detailed assessment.
- Contribute to remaining-life calculations and future inspection planning for deteriorating equipment.
- Define appropriate inspection coverage, methods and acceptance requirements for identified risks.
- Coordinate the collection of accurate equipment data needed for integrity assessments.
- Review asset-reliability reports covering static equipment condition and performance.
- Compare reliability findings with inspection history, maintenance records and operational experience.
- Identify recurring deterioration patterns or integrity concerns affecting similar equipment.
- Determine whether existing inspection programs adequately address known damage mechanisms.
- Recommend revisions where current inspection methods or frequencies do not reflect actual equipment risk.
- Maintain clear visibility of high-risk and condition-sensitive static equipment.
- Provide technical interpretation of inspection and reliability information to asset-management teams.
- Assess static equipment deviations and determine their possible consequences.
- Examine changes involving operating pressure, temperature, process conditions, materials or equipment duty.
- Evaluate whether a proposed deviation could accelerate deterioration or reduce remaining service life.
- Identify the inspection, monitoring or engineering controls required before accepting a deviation.
- Support safe decision-making when equipment must operate temporarily outside its normal condition.
- Recommend operating restrictions where continued service requires additional risk control.
- Confirm that approved changes do not create avoidable operational disruption or integrity exposure.
Ideal Profile
This position requires an experienced inspection engineer who can combine practical knowledge of static equipment with structured risk assessment and sound engineering judgment. The preferred candidate will understand how process conditions, materials, degradation mechanisms and inspection quality influence equipment reliability. The successful professional should be capable of evaluating incomplete or conflicting technical information, identifying the most significant integrity risk and developing a defensible course of action. The role also requires confidence when communicating equipment limitations and recommended controls to operational and asset-management stakeholders. Candidates should possess:
- Bachelor 's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or an equivalent professional qualification.
- At least eight years of relevant engineering, inspection or asset-integrity experience.
- Minimum two years of direct experience in inspection-related occupations.
- Practical experience with static equipment in a plant or large industrial environment.
- Strong understanding of risk-based inspection principles and implementation.
- Experience reviewing equipment-condition, reliability and inspection reports.
- Ability to assess equipment deterioration and determine appropriate inspection responses.
- Knowledge of common damage mechanisms affecting process-industry equipment.
- Experience participating in static equipment failure investigations.
- Proven ability to conduct or support Root Cause Analysis.
- Familiarity with Fitness-for-Service assessment and remaining-life evaluation.
- Ability to define inspection scopes and select suitable examination techniques.
- Experience tracking integrity actions, audit recommendations and technical closeout evidence.
- Understanding of inspection quality assurance and contractor-performance requirements.
- Ability to evaluate new inspection technologies and their practical applications.
- Advanced troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong technical-report writing and equipment-risk communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with operations, maintenance, inspection, engineering and asset-management teams.
- Sound knowledge of applicable international inspection and integrity standards.
- Professional certification in API 579.
