Role Context: The Picker - Online Grocery Fulfilment supports the complete preparation of digital customer orders within the Marks and Spencer Food operation. The role involves selecting products according to order specifications, checking freshness and expiry dates, applying approved substitutions, separating temperature-sensitive items, and preparing completed orders for dispatch. Accurate and timely fulfilment directly influences customer satisfaction, delivery performance, food quality, stock control, and the reliability of the online shopping service. The picker will work closely with store operations, customer service, inventory, and delivery teams to ensure every order is handed over correctly and on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

• Pick online grocery orders accurately using handheld scanners, mobile applications, or approved digital picking systems.
• Review each order carefully and select the correct product, quantity, size, flavour, weight, and specification.
• Complete customer orders within agreed service level timelines.
• Prioritize scheduled deliveries, urgent orders, and Click and Collect requests according to operational instructions.
• Maintain strong picking productivity without compromising product accuracy or quality.
• Select the freshest available products across bakery, produce, chilled food, frozen food, groceries, and ready meals.
• Inspect expiry dates, packaging condition, labels, seals, appearance, and product quality before adding items to an order.
• Apply First In, First Out principles where required while ensuring customers receive products with suitable remaining shelf life.
• Follow approved substitution guidelines when a requested product is unavailable.
• Consider customer preferences and product suitability before selecting substitute items.
• Report unavailable products, repeated shortages, damaged goods, and quality concerns to the Team Leader.
• Pack products carefully to prevent damage, leakage, contamination, or deterioration during transportation.
• Separate frozen, chilled, ambient, fragile, bakery, produce, and household products according to handling procedures.
• Use appropriate bags, containers, insulation, and protective packaging for each product category.
• Label completed orders accurately with the required customer, delivery, and collection information.
• Conduct a final order check before handing packages to the delivery or Click and Collect team.
• Confirm that all order components are complete and correctly assigned to the relevant customer.
• Report stock shortages, inventory differences, incorrect locations, and damaged merchandise.
• Assist with shelf replenishment and product availability when operationally required.
• Follow approved stock handling procedures to maintain accurate inventory records.
• Support stock counts, cycle counts, availability checks, and inventory control activities.
• Maintain cold chain requirements when handling chilled and frozen products.
• Follow food safety, HACCP, municipality, workplace health, and safety regulations.
• Handle all food products hygienically throughout picking, checking, packing, and handover.
• Keep picking equipment, workstations, fulfilment areas, storage spaces, and packaging materials clean and organized.
• Meet daily picking accuracy, productivity, order completion, and customer service targets.
• Follow standard operating procedures for online grocery fulfilment and order preparation.
• Communicate delays, product issues, system problems, and order discrepancies promptly.
• Attend team briefings, training sessions, safety updates, and operational meetings.
• Participate in process improvement activities designed to increase speed, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
• Provide additional replenishment, packing, inventory, or store support during peak trading periods.
• Work collaboratively with store operations, customer service, stock, and delivery colleagues.

Ideal Profile

• High School Diploma or equivalent qualification.
• 1-3 years of experience in Retail, supermarkets, grocery operations, warehousing, e-commerce, inventory, or fulfilment.
• Previous experience in online grocery picking or customer order fulfilment is preferred.
• Familiarity with fresh, chilled, frozen, bakery, produce, and ambient grocery products.
• Experience using handheld scanners, radio frequency devices, mobile picking applications, or digital inventory systems.
• Understanding of product quality checks, expiry date control, food handling, and stock rotation.
• Knowledge of food safety and cold chain practices is advantageous.
• Strong attention to detail when selecting, checking, packing, and labelling products.
• Ability to organize and prioritize several customer orders under time-sensitive conditions.
• Comfortable working quickly while maintaining consistent accuracy.
• Basic technology skills and confidence using digital order systems.
• Strong customer-focused mindset with an understanding of how product selection affects the online shopping experience.
• Able to work independently with limited supervision while remaining responsive to team instructions.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
