Role Context

The Material Inspector will support construction supervision by ensuring materials arriving at site and incorporated into permanent works comply with approved project requirements. The role involves field sampling, laboratory coordination, in-situ testing, source verification, and close cooperation with Work Inspectors, the Senior Work Inspector, and the Senior Materials Engineer. Accurate and timely inspection is essential to preventing unsuitable materials from entering construction, reducing rework, and helping roads, bridges, concrete structures, and utilities meet required quality and durability standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect construction materials delivered to site and verify compliance with approved project specifications.
  • Confirm materials originate from approved manufacturers, suppliers, quarries, batching plants, or other accepted sources.
  • Supervise sampling and testing activities carried out at construction locations.
  • Witness laboratory tests conducted by contractors and independent third-party testing organizations.
  • Monitor in-situ testing and confirm procedures follow approved requirements.
  • Prepare and identify material samples for laboratory testing.
  • Coordinate testing activities with the Work Inspector responsible for the related construction activity.
  • Confirm that work areas are ready and approved before required material testing begins.
  • Discuss questionable results, material conditions, or potential compliance issues with relevant inspectors and engineers.
  • Perform sampling efficiently so testing requirements do not create unnecessary delays to contractor operations.
  • Conduct routine checks on stored and delivered materials for consistency with approved submissions.
  • Compare delivered materials against approved source information, certificates, and technical documentation.
  • Review material-related Inspection and Test Plans and applicable method statements.
  • Verify that testing frequency and sampling requirements are followed.
  • Support assessment of test results and identify materials that fail to satisfy specification requirements.
  • Assist with quality control and quality assurance activities across assigned construction works.
  • Maintain accurate inspection, sampling, and testing records.
  • Support the Senior Work Inspector and Senior Materials Engineer with material reviews and technical documentation.
  • Assist in the review, approval, testing, and acceptance process for construction materials.
  • Identify noncompliant materials and ensure they are reported through established project procedures.
  • Coordinate with contractors, laboratory personnel, inspectors, and engineering teams regarding testing requirements.
  • Review working drawings and specifications when assessing material suitability for particular construction activities.
  • Maintain clear records and reports using applicable project software and document management systems.
  • Support continuous monitoring of material quality throughout construction.
Ideal Profile

Candidates should hold a technical diploma or degree in a relevant discipline with at least five years of experience performing similar materials inspection work. Civil Engineering graduates may qualify with at least three years of relevant experience on roads, bridges, concrete, utilities, or similar infrastructure projects. The position requires the ability to read and understand working drawings, construction specifications, Inspection and Test Plans, method statements, and related technical documentation. Candidates should be confident enforcing approved specifications and contract requirements when materials do not meet required standards. Practical understanding of construction materials, sampling, laboratory testing, field testing, quality control, and quality assurance is essential. The successful candidate should be fully computer literate and comfortable using project-specific engineering and construction software to retrieve information, maintain records, and prepare reports. Good written and spoken communication skills are required, together with the ability to coordinate effectively with inspectors, engineers, contractors, laboratories, and wider project teams.
