Manager - General Ledger Finance in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is a senior Retail opportunity responsible for maintaining accurate general ledger accounts across hypermarket and supermarket operations. Majid Al Futtaim is hiring an experienced finance manager to strengthen accounting controls, oversee financial closing, ensure compliance with international accounting standards, manage audits, and improve cost efficiency. The position requires strong retail finance knowledge, managerial experience, and the ability to coordinate with business units, suppliers, customers, auditors, and department heads. The manager will protect the integrity of financial records while supporting budget discipline, policy compliance, and informed decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the accuracy and completeness of general ledger accounts across hypermarket and supermarket operations.
- Establish financial control mechanisms that support compliance with approved budgets, accounting policies, and internal procedures.
- Monitor budget performance and initiate corrective measures when expenditure exceeds approved limits.
- Ensure accounting practices remain aligned with Group guidelines and applicable international accounting standards.
- Review general ledger balances and confirm that transactions are posted to the correct accounts, periods, cost centres, and business units.
- Verify that payments are booked accurately and supported by valid approvals and documentation.
- Ensure provisions, accruals, prepayments, and adjusting entries are calculated and recorded correctly.
- Review unusual, high-value, aged, or unsupported balances and coordinate timely resolution.
- Ensure intercompany reconciliations are completed accurately and within established deadlines.
- Investigate differences between related entities and confirm that reconciling items are cleared promptly.
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing activities.
- Coordinate closing requirements with finance teams, customers, suppliers, operations, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Confirm that all required journals, reconciliations, schedules, provisions, and supporting records are completed before closing.
- Lead the annual account balance confirmation and closure process.
- Review balance sheet schedules and validate the accuracy of supporting documentation.
- Coordinate external audit activities and respond to auditor requests for accounting information.
- Provide financial statements, reconciliations, working papers, transaction records, and supporting evidence during audits.
- Investigate accounting non-compliance findings and implement suitable corrective actions.
- Monitor the completion of audit recommendations and strengthen controls where weaknesses are identified.
- Work with department heads to understand financial concerns and recommend practical accounting or control solutions.
- Provide guidance on cost allocation, expense recognition, provisions, budget treatment, and accounting procedures.
- Monitor general expenses across the country and identify opportunities for sustainable cost reduction.
- Review proposed cost-saving activities and evaluate their operational and financial impact.
- Measure the effectiveness of implemented cost-reduction initiatives and report results to management.
- Recommend improvements to departmental finance policies, procedures, workflows, and control frameworks.
- Implement approved procedures covering general ledger, closing, reconciliation, reporting, audit, and budget control activities.
- Ensure all finance processes meet relevant procedural, legislative, governance, and service-quality requirements.
- Prepare and review financial reports, account analyses, management summaries, and variance explanations.
- Develop team capability through objective setting, coaching, performance reviews, and technical guidance.
- Maintain confidentiality and protect company, supplier, customer, and employee financial information.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Commerce, Accounting, or a related discipline.
- MBA or postgraduate qualification in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration is preferred.
- Minimum six years of experience within a finance or accounting department.
- Demonstrated experience in a finance managerial or team leadership role.
- At least two years of experience in retail, supermarkets, hypermarkets, FMCG, or a related consumer business.
- Strong practical knowledge of general ledger accounting and financial closing.
- Experience managing accruals, provisions, reconciliations, intercompany balances, and adjusting entries.
- Sound knowledge of international accounting standards and internal financial controls.
- Experience supporting external audits and resolving accounting findings.
- Strong understanding of budgeting, variance analysis, expense control, and cost-reduction programmes.
- Ability to analyze complex account balances and investigate discrepancies.
- Experience developing or improving finance policies, procedures, and control mechanisms.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide accounting teams and coordinate multiple stakeholders.
- Clear communication and presentation skills for working with senior management and department heads.
- High level of numerical accuracy, professional judgement, integrity, and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage strict reporting deadlines in a high-volume Retail environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, financial reporting tools, and enterprise resource planning systems.
