Job summary

NMC Abu Dhabi is seeking a licensed Histotechnologist to prepare tissue samples, perform routine and special stains, and ensure high-quality slides for pathologists. The role requires a DOH/DHA/MOH license to work in UAE, a BSc in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, and 2+ years of histopath experience.

English fluency is essential, Arabic is desirable but not required. The incumbent will maintain histology equipment, participate in QC, and collaborate with pathology staff while

Qualifications

• Bachelor level degree in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
• ASCP/CSMLS certification in the specialty is preferred.
• Two years histopath experience required for Bachelor degree holders; one year if pursuing postgraduate study.

Responsibilities

• Prepare tissue samples for routine microscopic analysis.
• Section tissue using microtomy techniques to produce quality slides.
• Perform staining: routine, special, immunohistochemistry as requested.
• Maintain QC and communicate stain quality results to supervisor/pathologist.
• Operate and maintain histology equipment per manufacturer guidelines.
• Adhere to OSH and infection control policies and procedures.

Job description

Performs clinical tests in anyone of or a combination of areas of specialization depending on the size and scope of the laboratory activity. Maybe assigned to or receiving supervision from Chief Technician.

Responsibilities:

1. Prepares tissue samples for routine microscopic analysis.
2. Gross descriptions of small, uncomplicated specimens are recorded where appropriate, using specific terminology according to procedure
3. Tissue samples are prepared using correct procedures for preservation including, processing, freezing and embedding as appropriate per procedure.
4. Tissue samples are sectioned using good microtomy techniques on microtomes to produce acceptable quality slides for staining according to procedures.
5. Workload is prioritized and managed to meet expected Turn-Around-Times (TATs).
6. Competence is maintained and new skills added as technology changes.
7. Stains tissue for Routine, Special Stains, Immunofluorescence, Immunohistochemistry and Enzyme Histochemistry as requested.
8. Chemical solutions and stains are prepared, labeled and stored accurately according to procedure and need.
9. Stains are accurately performed and Quality Control (QC) results recorded. Stain quality is evaluated for acceptability prior to release of histological sections to the ordering pathologist.
10. Stain quality results are communicated to the supervisor and/or ordering pathologist.
11. New stains are developed and instituted as needed by working in conjunction with the supervisor, pathology staff and other technicians.
12. Maintains and operates laboratory equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and procedures.
13. Instrumentation necessary for Histology functions is operated within the manufactures’ guidelines and according to procedures.
14. Instrument malfunctions are recognized and troubleshooting is performed to ensure accurate operation. Instrument maintenance is performed and documented on a scheduled basis.
15. Comply with all OSH and infection control policies, standards and procedures and cooperate with hospital management to comply those requirements
16. Work accordance with the documented OSH procedures and instructions, specific responsibilities
17. Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures
18. Notifying OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues and assistance with the preparation of risk assessments, incident reports
19. Comply with Waste management procedures and policies
20. Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs
21. Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems

Qualifications:

1. Valid DOH/DHA or MOH License as Histo Technologist to work in UAE.
2. B.Sc. in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent qualification requiring not less than 3 years training course. And one year emphasis of the curriculum in the field of sub specialty in the basic qualification curriculum or certification by ASCP in the specialty. M.Sc. / Post Graduate in that specialty from an accredited program leading to registration with ASCP/CSMLS or equivalent.
3. Not less than two (2) years of Medical Laboratory experience in Histopath procedures are required for Bachelor degree holders. If Post Graduate / M.Sc. then one (1) year of Medical Laboratory experience in Histopath experience is required.
4. Currently licensed in country of origin and with HAAD license to practice in Abu Dhabi UAE.
5. Fluent in spoken & written English, Arabic language is desirable, but not essential.
6. Ability to learn and handle automation & IT programs is desirable but not essential.
