Role Context

The Inclusion Assistant provides direct educational and developmental support to students who require additional assistance with academic, physical, emotional, behavioural or communication needs. Working closely with teachers and the Head of Inclusion, the role helps translate individualized support plans into practical strategies used throughout the school day. The position is designed to increase student access, confidence and independence rather than create unnecessary dependence. Through structured guidance, differentiated resources, reinforcement and intervention support, the Inclusion Assistant contributes to measurable progress while helping students participate successfully alongside their peers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support individual students inside and outside the classroom so they can participate fully in learning and school activities.
  • Assist with implementation of Individual Education Plans and align daily support with agreed IEP goals.
  • Monitor student progress and provide accurate feedback to teachers and the Inclusion team.
  • Support academic, physical, emotional, behavioural and communication needs according to each student 's profile.
  • Help students develop greater independence by teaching clear and practical learning strategies.
  • Prepare differentiated materials and resources that improve access to classroom learning.
  • Work alongside homeroom and subject teachers to reinforce planned instructional activities.
  • Deliver individual instruction under teacher direction and support small-group learning when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate tasks, activities and learning strategies in ways suited to individual student needs.
  • Monitor assigned work and help students remain engaged and on task.
  • Check student work in line with teacher guidance and school procedures while learning is in progress.
  • Reinforce positive achievement and communicate relevant progress observations to teachers.
  • Support student self-esteem and encourage positive participation within the classroom community.
  • Assist with behaviour support approaches in accordance with whole-school policy.
  • Supervise students during lessons, specialist classes and other school locations when required.
  • Contribute to accurate student records maintained by homeroom and subject teachers.
  • Prepare materials needed to scaffold learning and support curriculum differentiation.
  • Attend intervention sessions involving Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy or Applied Behaviour Analysis where required.
  • Reinforce therapy targets within school routines to help students generalize and consolidate new skills.
  • Work collaboratively with speech therapists, occupational therapists and other professionals supporting individual students.
  • Build strong and regular communication with homeroom and subject teachers.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow approved communication procedures regarding parents and student information.
  • Support health and safety requirements and remain proactive in identifying student welfare concerns.
  • Attend professional meetings, training sessions and development activities as required.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities, school trips and educational visits where student support is required.
  • Experienced Inclusion Assistants may mentor newly appointed colleagues as part of team development.
  • Follow additional reasonable directions provided by the Principal or Head of Inclusion.
Ideal Profile Candidates

Candidates should hold a Diploma-level SEN qualification and have at least 2 years of experience supporting students with special educational needs. Practical experience working directly with students in a school environment is important. Candidates should understand how to follow IEP targets, support differentiated instruction and adapt assistance according to individual learning and developmental needs. The role requires patience, consistency and strong observation skills. The successful candidate should recognize when a student requires additional support while also encouraging independence and avoiding unnecessary intervention. Experience supporting behavioural, communication, emotional or academic needs will be valuable. Familiarity with intervention approaches involving Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy or Applied Behaviour Analysis will further strengthen suitability. Candidates must be able to work collaboratively with classroom teachers, inclusion specialists and external professionals while maintaining appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries.
