Role Context The Consultant Transplant Surgeon will deliver highly specialized surgical care for patients requiring liver and other abdominal organ transplantation. The position spans donor and recipient evaluation, technically complex transplant procedures, hepatobiliary surgery, organ procurement, postoperative management, and long-term coordination with transplant medicine teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients being considered for liver transplantation and participate in multidisciplinary transplant selection decisions.
• Review clinical history, liver disease severity, imaging, laboratory findings, comorbidities, and surgical risk.
• Perform living donor liver transplantation according to approved clinical protocols and surgical privileges.
• Undertake deceased donor liver transplant procedures and complex recipient operations.
• Participate in kidney, pancreas, and other abdominal organ transplant procedures where required.
• Perform complex hepatobiliary surgical procedures associated with transplant and advanced liver disease.
• Assess donor anatomy and surgical suitability in collaboration with transplant physicians, radiologists, and other specialists.
• Participate in living donor surgical planning with strong emphasis on donor safety.
• Conduct donor hepatectomy procedures according to established transplant standards.
• Perform recipient hepatectomy and liver graft implantation.
• Undertake vascular reconstruction and anastomosis during complex transplant procedures.
• Perform biliary reconstruction using appropriate surgical techniques.
• Apply advanced microsurgical principles where required for technically demanding vascular or biliary reconstruction.
• Manage intraoperative challenges including bleeding, vascular complications, anatomical variation, and graft-related technical issues.
• Participate in organ retrieval and procurement services.
• Coordinate donor organ assessment, preservation, and surgical logistics with procurement teams.
• Provide consultant-level on-call coverage for transplant emergencies and organ offers.
• Manage preoperative optimization for transplant recipients in coordination with hepatology and anesthesia teams.
• Provide comprehensive postoperative surgical management following liver transplantation.
• Monitor graft function, surgical recovery, wound status, drainage, vascular integrity, and biliary function.
• Identify and manage postoperative bleeding, thrombosis, biliary complications, infection, and other surgical complications.
• Coordinate urgent surgical intervention when graft or patient survival is threatened.
• Work closely with transplant hepatologists on immunosuppression, graft dysfunction, rejection, and long-term management.
• Collaborate with nephrologists when managing kidney transplant or combined organ transplant patients.
• Coordinate care with intensivists during immediate postoperative and critically ill transplant management.
• Work with anesthesiologists during high-risk transplant procedures and perioperative stabilization.
• Collaborate with interventional radiology for vascular, biliary, and postoperative transplant complications.
• Participate in multidisciplinary transplant rounds and formal transplant selection meetings.
• Support care for patients with acute liver failure requiring urgent transplant assessment.
• Manage complex hepatobiliary cases including appropriate liver tumors and advanced biliary disease.
• Participate in surgical decision-making for patients requiring transplantation versus alternative HPB procedures.
• Maintain accurate operative notes, transplant documentation, donor records, and postoperative treatment plans.
• Follow transplant-specific infection prevention, organ handling, surgical safety, and patient identification standards.
• Contribute to transplant morbidity and mortality reviews.
• Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives focused on graft and patient outcomes.
• Monitor surgical outcomes and support development of evidence-based transplant protocols.
• Contribute to transplant program expansion, workflow development, and clinical pathway improvement.
• Teach and supervise fellows, residents, junior surgeons, and multidisciplinary staff.

Ideal Profile

• MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
• Completion of an accredited General Surgery Residency.
• Board Certification or equivalent qualification in General Surgery.
• Fellowship training in Abdominal Organ Transplant Surgery, Liver Transplant Surgery, or Hepatobiliary Surgery.
• Fellowship or Board Certification in Transplant Surgery is highly desirable.
• Appropriate UAE Consultant license, eligibility, or ability to obtain the required professional license.
• Minimum 5-10 years of post-fellowship consultant-level surgical experience.
