Role Context

The Consultant - Liver Transplant Surgery will provide senior surgical leadership for patients requiring liver transplantation and complex hepatobiliary intervention. The position covers donor and recipient assessment, transplantation, perioperative management, postoperative surveillance, organ procurement, and management of complications associated with advanced abdominal surgery. The consultant will also contribute to kidney, pancreas, and other abdominal organ transplant procedures where appropriate. Close collaboration with hepatologists, nephrologists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, interventional radiologists, pathologists, transplant coordinators, nursing teams, and allied specialists will be essential to achieving safe outcomes and maintaining a dependable transplant service.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform living donor liver transplant procedures within approved consultant privileges.
• Undertake deceased donor liver transplantation for suitable recipients.
• Participate in recipient selection, surgical planning, and multidisciplinary transplant assessment.
• Perform complex hepatobiliary surgical procedures associated with advanced liver disease and transplantation.
• Participate in kidney transplantation where required by the transplant program.
• Support pancreas and other abdominal organ transplant procedures according to clinical need and expertise.
• Carry out organ procurement procedures and participate in donor retrieval services.
• Assess donor and recipient anatomy, operative risk, and suitability before transplantation.
• Provide comprehensive preoperative surgical consultation for transplant candidates.
• Manage postoperative transplant patients through early recovery and long-term surgical follow-up.
• Monitor patients for vascular, biliary, infectious, and surgical complications following transplantation.
• Perform complex vascular reconstruction and anastomosis during transplant surgery.
• Apply advanced microsurgical techniques where required during complex procedures.
• Coordinate closely with hepatology and transplant medicine teams throughout the patient pathway.
• Collaborate with critical care and anesthesia teams during high-risk perioperative management.
• Participate in multidisciplinary transplant meetings and complex case reviews.
• Contribute to on-call transplant coverage and respond to urgent donor and recipient requirements.
• Support rapid decision-making when donor organs become available.
• Maintain accurate operative notes, transplant documentation, and postoperative treatment records.
• Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews and quality improvement initiatives.
• Contribute to transplant program protocols, clinical pathways, and patient safety standards.
• Support development of policies governing donor selection, transplantation, follow-up, and organ utilization.
• Mentor junior surgeons, fellows, residents, and other members of the transplant team.
• Participate in teaching, clinical research, publications, and professional education.
• Contribute to strategic development and expansion of liver and multi-organ transplant services.

Ideal Profile

• Candidates should hold an MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
• Completion of an accredited General Surgery residency is required, followed by fellowship training in Abdominal Organ Transplant Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, or a closely related advanced surgical discipline.
• Board Certification in General Surgery is required.
• Fellowship or Board Certification in Transplant Surgery is highly desirable.
• Candidates should bring approximately 5-10 years of post-fellowship consultant-level experience with substantial independent responsibility for transplant surgery.
