Role Context The Consultant Transplant Surgeon - Liver Transplant will provide advanced surgical and clinical management for patients undergoing liver transplantation and other complex abdominal organ procedures. The role combines donor and recipient surgery, hepatobiliary expertise, organ procurement, vascular reconstruction, intensive perioperative management, and long-term transplant follow-up. Close collaboration with hepatologists, nephrologists, anesthesiologists, intensivists, transplant coordinators, radiologists, pathologists, and other specialists will support safe transplantation and continued development of a high-quality multi-organ transplant program.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform living donor liver transplantation procedures according to established transplant protocols.
• Undertake deceased donor liver transplant surgery for appropriately selected recipients.
• Participate in kidney, pancreas, and other abdominal organ transplantation procedures when required.
• Perform complex hepatobiliary surgery involving the liver, biliary system, and related abdominal structures.
• Conduct comprehensive surgical assessment of liver transplant candidates.
• Participate in donor evaluation and assess surgical suitability for living donor procedures.
• Support recipient selection through multidisciplinary transplant review and risk assessment.
• Perform complex vascular anastomoses and microsurgical reconstruction during transplant procedures.
• Participate in organ procurement and donor retrieval activities.
• Provide comprehensive pre-operative planning for transplant and hepatobiliary cases.
• Coordinate intra-operative care with transplant anesthesiology, perfusion, nursing, and surgical support teams.
• Manage postoperative transplant patients in collaboration with intensive care and transplant medicine specialists.
• Monitor graft function, surgical recovery, vascular integrity, and potential postoperative complications.
• Provide long-term surgical follow-up for liver transplant recipients.
• Participate in emergency and on-call transplant services according to program requirements.
• Collaborate with hepatologists, nephrologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, intensivists, and transplant coordinators.
• Participate in multidisciplinary transplant meetings and complex case reviews.
• Maintain accurate operative reports, transplant records, consent documentation, and follow-up information.
• Contribute to transplant program development, clinical governance, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Participate in clinical audits, outcome reviews, research, publications, and professional education.
• Teach and mentor junior surgeons, fellows, residents, and other transplant team members.
• Maintain current knowledge of advances in liver transplantation, HPB surgery, immunosuppression, organ preservation, and transplant technology.

Ideal Profile

• Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
• Completion of an accredited General Surgery Residency.
• Fellowship training in Abdominal Organ Transplant Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, or both.
• Board Certification in General Surgery.
• Fellowship or Board Certification in Transplant Surgery is highly desirable.
• Minimum 5-10 years of post-fellowship consultant-level experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in liver transplantation.
• Extensive experience performing living donor and deceased donor liver transplant procedures.
• Experience in kidney, pancreas, or multi-organ transplantation is preferred.
• Strong background in complex hepatobiliary surgery.
• Advanced microsurgical and vascular anastomosis skills.
• Strong clinical judgment and ability to make complex transplant decisions.
• Valid DHA Consultant License or eligibility to obtain consultant-level licensing in Dubai.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary collaboration abilities.
• Academic, research, teaching, or publication experience is advantageous.
