Role Context

The Consultant Pediatric Plastic Surgeon provides specialist surgical care for infants, children, and adolescents affected by congenital anomalies, traumatic injuries, burns, scars, soft tissue defects, and other reconstructive conditions. The role combines careful surgical planning with age-appropriate treatment strategies designed to restore function, support normal development, and achieve the best possible aesthetic outcome. Because many pediatric reconstructive conditions involve multiple anatomical systems and stages of care, the consultant works closely with craniofacial teams, neurosurgeons, ENT specialists, orthopedic surgeons, dermatologists, rehabilitation professionals, and other pediatric specialists. The position has a direct impact on long-term function, appearance, confidence, and quality of life for children requiring complex surgical treatment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess infants, children, and adolescents with congenital or acquired plastic surgical conditions.
  • Diagnose pediatric deformities requiring reconstructive or corrective surgery.
  • Evaluate congenital craniofacial and soft tissue abnormalities.
  • Develop individualized surgical plans according to age, anatomy, functional impairment, and long-term developmental needs.
  • Perform cleft lip repair using appropriate pediatric reconstructive techniques.
  • Conduct cleft palate surgery and coordinate staged follow-up when required.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary cleft and craniofacial programs.
  • Perform craniofacial reconstruction within approved clinical privileges.
  • Manage pediatric hand abnormalities requiring reconstructive intervention.
  • Perform soft tissue reconstruction for congenital or acquired defects.
  • Treat pediatric burn injuries requiring reconstructive surgery.
  • Plan and perform burn scar reconstruction.
  • Conduct scar revision procedures when clinically appropriate.
  • Manage traumatic soft tissue injuries in pediatric patients.
  • Evaluate complex pediatric trauma requiring reconstructive input.
  • Perform cosmetic or corrective pediatric procedures when medically appropriate and properly indicated.
  • Assess patients for staged reconstructive surgery.
  • Coordinate timing of procedures to support growth and developmental milestones.
  • Determine when additional imaging or specialist assessment is needed before surgery.
  • Participate in preoperative multidisciplinary planning for complex cases.
  • Explain surgical options, expected outcomes, limitations, and possible complications to families.
  • Obtain informed consent in accordance with applicable pediatric and hospital standards.
  • Provide perioperative management for pediatric plastic surgery patients.
  • Monitor postoperative recovery and identify complications promptly.
  • Develop individualized postoperative treatment and rehabilitation plans.
  • Coordinate rehabilitation following complex reconstructive procedures.
  • Review wound healing, scar development, and functional recovery during follow-up.
  • Adjust long-term treatment plans when further staged procedures are required.
  • Collaborate with craniofacial surgeons on complex facial deformities.
  • Work with neurosurgeons when craniofacial conditions involve intracranial or skull pathology.
  • Coordinate with ENT specialists on airway, facial, and cleft-related concerns.
  • Collaborate with orthopedic surgeons for limb, hand, or musculoskeletal reconstruction.
  • Work with dermatologists when skin disorders or lesions require surgical management.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences for complex pediatric patients.
  • Provide inpatient pediatric plastic surgery consultations.
  • Deliver outpatient assessment and long-term surgical follow-up.
  • Support management of children with congenital syndromes requiring reconstructive care.
  • Coordinate care for patients requiring several surgical specialties.
  • Maintain accurate and timely operative and clinical documentation.
  • Follow applicable UAE healthcare standards and institutional policies.
  • Apply strict infection control principles in surgical and postoperative care.
  • Maintain patient safety throughout operative and perioperative management.
  • Participate in clinical audits related to pediatric surgical outcomes.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives within surgical services.
  • Review complications and support improvements in clinical pathways.
  • Participate in pediatric plastic surgery research where appropriate.
  • Contribute to teaching for residents, fellows, and junior surgical staff.
  • Mentor multidisciplinary healthcare professionals involved in pediatric reconstructive care.
  • Maintain continuing medical education in Plastic Surgery and pediatric reconstruction.
  • Stay current with advances in craniofacial surgery, microsurgery, reconstructive techniques, and scar management.
Ideal Profile

The position requires an MBBS or equivalent recognized medical degree together with advanced specialist training in Plastic Surgery. The successful surgeon should demonstrate strong expertise across cleft lip and palate surgery, craniofacial reconstruction, pediatric hand surgery, burn reconstruction, scar revision, and soft tissue reconstruction. Experience participating in dedicated cleft and craniofacial multidisciplinary programs is highly desirable. Exposure to pediatric microsurgery and advanced complex reconstructive procedures would provide a significant advantage. Candidates should demonstrate excellent operative judgment, technical precision, and the ability to plan staged reconstruction around pediatric growth and development.
