Role Context

The Consultant Pediatric Plastic Surgeon will provide comprehensive surgical care for children whose conditions may affect appearance, movement, growth, function, or long-term development. Cases may involve congenital anomalies, facial deformities, hand abnormalities, burns, traumatic injuries, scarring, or complex tissue loss requiring staged reconstruction. Because pediatric reconstruction often extends across several years, the consultant will help plan treatment around growth, development, rehabilitation, and future surgical needs. Close collaboration with craniofacial surgeons, neurosurgeons, ENT specialists, orthopedic surgeons, dermatologists, rehabilitation professionals, anesthesiologists, and pediatric teams will be central to achieving safe and durable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose congenital, developmental, traumatic, and acquired conditions requiring pediatric plastic or reconstructive surgery.
  • Perform cleft lip and palate repair using techniques appropriate to the child 's anatomy, age, function, and future development.
  • Manage craniofacial deformities and contribute to multidisciplinary surgical planning for complex pediatric cases.
  • Perform pediatric hand surgery for congenital abnormalities, trauma, deformity, and functional impairment.
  • Undertake burns reconstruction including contracture release, scar management, and restoration of damaged tissue.
  • Perform scar revision procedures where scars cause functional limitation, discomfort, distortion, or significant cosmetic concern.
  • Carry out soft tissue reconstruction for congenital defects, trauma, burns, surgical wounds, or tissue loss.
  • Apply microsurgical techniques where advanced reconstruction requires vascularized tissue transfer or other specialized procedures.
  • Evaluate pediatric trauma cases and determine whether immediate, staged, or delayed reconstruction offers the best long-term outcome.
  • Conduct inpatient reviews for children recovering from major reconstructive procedures or complex injuries.
  • Provide outpatient consultations for initial assessment, surgical planning, postoperative review, and long-term surveillance.
  • Develop individualized reconstructive pathways that consider growth, function, appearance, rehabilitation needs, and future procedures.
  • Coordinate postoperative rehabilitation with physiotherapy, occupational therapy, hand therapy, and other relevant services.
  • Work closely with craniofacial surgery, neurosurgery, ENT, orthopedics, dermatology, and pediatric specialties on combined cases.
  • Explain diagnoses, treatment choices, surgical stages, potential complications, expected recovery, and realistic outcomes to parents and caregivers.
  • Monitor healing, wound condition, scar development, functional recovery, and reconstructive results throughout follow-up.
  • Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative reports, consent documentation, treatment plans, and follow-up records.
  • Follow DOH Abu Dhabi regulations, hospital protocols, infection control requirements, and surgical safety standards.
  • Participate in clinical audits, research programs, teaching activities, case reviews, and continuing medical education.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives focused on pediatric surgical safety, reconstructive outcomes, and multidisciplinary care.
Ideal Profile

The successful candidate will hold an MBBS or equivalent medical qualification recognized by DOH Abu Dhabi together with Board Certification or Fellowship training in Plastic Surgery and substantial subspecialty experience in Pediatric Plastic Surgery. A valid DOH Consultant License or appropriate Eligibility Letter in Plastic Surgery is required.
