Role Context

The Consultant Palliative Care physician will provide comprehensive medical and supportive management for patients living with advanced, chronic, progressive, or terminal illnesses. The role focuses on reducing pain and distressing symptoms while helping patients maintain dignity, comfort, function, and quality of life throughout complex stages of illness. The consultant will work closely with oncology, internal medicine, critical care, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation, and other clinical services. A major responsibility will be guiding patients and families through difficult treatment decisions, goals-of-care discussions, advance planning, and transitions between hospital, outpatient, home-based, and hospice services where available.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess patients requiring palliative, supportive, or end-of-life medical care.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans focused on symptom relief, comfort, function, and quality of life.
  • Provide specialist management of complex pain associated with cancer, chronic illness, and advanced disease.
  • Treat distressing symptoms including breathlessness, nausea, fatigue, agitation, insomnia, loss of appetite, and other palliative care concerns.
  • Review medication regimens and optimize pharmacological management according to symptoms, disease progression, and patient priorities.
  • Coordinate care with oncology, internal medicine, critical care, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation, and allied healthcare teams.
  • Conduct structured family meetings to discuss clinical condition, prognosis, treatment priorities, and expected disease progression.
  • Facilitate goals-of-care discussions and advance care planning based on patient preferences, clinical realities, and ethical considerations.
  • Support patients and families during end-of-life decision-making with clear and compassionate communication.
  • Ensure continuity of palliative care across inpatient, outpatient, home care, and hospice services where applicable.
  • Identify psychosocial, emotional, spiritual, and practical concerns requiring multidisciplinary support.
  • Contribute to development of palliative care protocols, clinical pathways, referral criteria, and service standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, audits, and clinical governance activities.
  • Support expansion and development of palliative and supportive care services within the healthcare organization.
  • Provide teaching and mentorship to physicians, residents, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in continuing medical education, conferences, departmental training, research, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation covering symptom assessments, treatment decisions, family discussions, advance planning, and follow-up.
Ideal Profile
  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Completion of accredited specialty training in Palliative Medicine or a related medical specialty.
  • Recognized Fellowship or subspecialty certification in Palliative Care.
  • Board Certification appropriate for consultant-level practice.
  • Minimum 5 years of post-board or post-fellowship experience as a Consultant in Palliative Care.
  • Strong experience managing pain and complex symptoms in patients with advanced disease.
  • Previous practice within a tertiary care hospital, cancer center, or dedicated palliative care service is preferred.
  • Expertise in oncology supportive care and end-of-life medicine is highly desirable.
  • Experience conducting goals-of-care discussions and advance care planning with patients and families.
  • Background in palliative care service development or quality improvement is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and counseling skills when managing emotionally sensitive clinical situations.
  • Strong leadership and multidisciplinary collaboration abilities.
  • Proficiency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is advantageous.
  • Eligibility for appropriate consultant-level medical licensing in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
