Overview

The Consultant – Palliative Care will provide comprehensive clinical and supportive services for patients living with advanced, chronic, or life‑limiting illnesses. Working within a multidisciplinary setting, the role focuses on pain relief, complex symptom management, advanced care planning, psychosocial support, and improving quality of life for patients and families.

Role Summary

The Consultant will assess and manage patients requiring specialist palliative medicine, supportive oncology care, and end‑of‑life services. The role demands advanced expertise in pain management, symptom control, goals‑of‑care discussions, and coordinated treatment across inpatient, outpatient, home care, and hospice environments. Collaboration with oncology, internal medicine, critical care, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation, and allied teams is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with advanced, chronic, or life‑limiting illnesses requiring palliative and supportive care.
  • Develop individualized clinical plans addressing pain, breathlessness, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, agitation, and other complex symptoms.
  • Provide specialist consultation for acute and chronic pain management using evidence‑based pharmacological and non‑pharmacological approaches.
  • Deliver supportive oncology care for patients undergoing cancer treatment or managing advanced malignancies.
  • Conduct comprehensive physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual assessments.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care with oncologists, internal medicine physicians, intensivists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, and other clinicians.
  • Lead family meetings to discuss prognosis, treatment priorities, patient preferences, and realistic care expectations.
  • Facilitate goals‑of‑care conversations, advance care planning, and shared decision‑making regarding end‑of‑life treatment.
  • Support patients and families through serious illness, disease progression, bereavement preparation, and emotionally challenging decisions.
  • Ensure continuity of care across hospital wards, outpatient clinics, home healthcare services, and hospice settings where applicable.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records, symptom assessments, medication plans, consent documentation, and follow‑up notes.
  • Participate in the development of palliative care policies, protocols, referral pathways, and clinical guidelines.
  • Contribute to patient safety programs, clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and service performance reviews.
  • Support the expansion and continuous improvement of palliative care services within the organization.
  • Provide education, clinical supervision, and mentorship to physicians, residents, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in departmental teaching, continuing medical education, conferences, case reviews, and professional development activities.
  • Promote a wider understanding of palliative care principles among healthcare professionals, patients, families, and the community.
  • Participate in clinical research, evidence‑based practice initiatives, and outcome measurement activities.
  • Maintain professional competency and comply with organizational, regulatory, ethical, and accreditation standards.
Candidate Requirements
  • Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Completion of accredited specialty training in Palliative Medicine or a related medical specialty.
  • Recognized fellowship, subspecialty certification, or advanced qualification in Palliative Care.
  • Board certification recognized by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi.
  • Eligibility for DOH Abu Dhabi licensure at Consultant level.
  • Minimum 5 years of post‑board or post‑fellowship experience as a Consultant in Palliative Care.
  • Demonstrated expertise in pain management, complex symptom control, supportive oncology, and end‑of‑life care.
  • Experience managing patients with cancer, organ failure, neurological disease, advanced chronic illness, or other life‑limiting conditions.
  • Strong understanding of advance care planning, medical ethics, capacity assessment, and shared clinical decision‑making.
  • Excellent communication skills for sensitive discussions with patients, relatives, caregivers, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven leadership, clinical governance, mentoring, and service‑development capabilities.
  • Ability to provide compassionate, culturally sensitive, and patient‑centered care.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Arabic language skills are advantageous.
Preferred Experience
  • Previous experience in a tertiary care hospital, cancer centre, hospice, or dedicated palliative care unit.
  • Experience providing inpatient, outpatient, home‑based, or community palliative care services.
  • Advanced knowledge of opioid prescribing, pain interventions, and complex medication management.
  • Experience developing clinical pathways, policies, referral systems, or specialist palliative care programs.
  • Participation in quality improvement projects, clinical audits, research, teaching, or healthcare accreditation activities.
