Role Context
The Consultant Palliative Care Physician will provide specialist care for patients living with advanced, chronic, or life-limiting illnesses. The position combines complex symptom management with coordinated supportive care, goals-of-care discussions, advance care planning, and family support. The consultant will also contribute to the development of palliative care services, clinical pathways, education, and quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, diagnose, and manage patients requiring specialist palliative and end-of-life care.
- Develop individualized treatment and symptom management plans for patients with advanced or chronic illnesses.
- Provide expert consultation for pain management and complex symptom control.
- Address physical symptoms and broader supportive-care needs affecting patient comfort and quality of life.
- Coordinate care with oncology, internal medicine, critical care, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation, and other relevant services.
- Conduct family meetings to discuss clinical priorities, treatment expectations, and patient needs.
- Facilitate goals-of-care discussions and advance care planning.
- Support appropriate end-of-life decision-making through clear and compassionate communication.
- Promote continuity of care across inpatient, outpatient, home-care, and hospice settings where applicable.
- Maintain professional standards and comply with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Leadership and Service Development
- Participate in the development and implementation of palliative care policies, protocols, and clinical pathways.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and patient-safety programs.
- Support the development and expansion of palliative care services within the healthcare organization.
- Promote multidisciplinary approaches to supportive and end-of-life care.
- Contribute clinical expertise to service planning and improvements in care delivery.
Education and Training
- Teach and mentor physicians, residents, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Participate in continuing medical education, conferences, and departmental educational activities.
- Promote awareness and understanding of palliative care principles among healthcare professionals and the wider community.
Research and Professional Development
- Participate in clinical research and audit activities.
- Contribute to evidence-based practice initiatives.
- Maintain current knowledge of developments in palliative medicine and supportive care.
- Maintain professional competency through continuing education and professional development.
Qualifications and Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
- Accredited specialty training in Palliative Medicine or a related specialty with recognized fellowship or subspecialty certification in Palliative Care.
- Recognized Board Certification appropriate to Consultant-level practice.
- Minimum 5 years of post-board or fellowship experience as a Consultant in Palliative Care.
- Appropriate professional licensing or eligibility to practice at Consultant level in Dubai, UAE.
- Excellent communication and clinical leadership capabilities.
- Strong multidisciplinary team collaboration skills.
- Proficiency in English.
- Arabic language skills are an advantage.
