Consultant Geriatrician – Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Hospital and Health Care

Key Responsibilities
- Assess, diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions affecting elderly patients, including complex cases with multiple comorbidities.
- Conduct Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments covering medical, functional, cognitive, psychological, medication‑related, nutritional and social needs.
- Develop individualized care plans addressing frailty, chronic disease burden, functional decline, quality of life, caregiver support and long‑term care goals.
- Manage dementia, delirium, falls, osteoporosis, frailty syndrome, polypharmacy, incontinence, mobility impairment, malnutrition risk and other age‑related complications.
- Provide specialist consultation for hospitalized elderly patients and support safe transitions between inpatient units, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation services, long‑term care and community care.
- Coordinate patient management with primary care physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists, dietitians and palliative care specialists.
- Promote preventive healthcare, healthy aging strategies, vaccination awareness, chronic disease control, falls prevention, medication optimisation and functional independence.
- Contribute to the design and expansion of geriatric medicine services, elderly care programmes, age‑friendly hospital practices and clinical referral pathways.
- Support quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, clinical governance, care pathway development and evidence‑based geriatric practice.
- Assist in establishing protocols and best practices for dementia care, delirium prevention, frailty screening, falls management and elderly patient discharge planning.
- Provide teaching, supervision and mentorship to physicians, residents, nurses, allied healthcare professionals and clinical trainees.
- Participate in CME activities, departmental learning sessions, audits, clinical research, service reviews and academic work related to ageing and elderly care.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation, assessment records, care plans, medication reviews, consultation notes and multidisciplinary recommendations in line with DOH standards and organisational policies.
Ideal Profile
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognised institution.
- Accredited specialty training in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine or a related medical specialty.
- Fellowship, subspecialty training or board qualification in Geriatric Medicine.
- Board Certification in Geriatric Medicine recognised by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi.
- Eligibility for DOH Abu Dhabi Consultant licensure.
- Minimum 3–5 years of post‑board or post‑fellowship experience as a Consultant Geriatrician.
- Strong expertise in Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and the management of medically complex elderly patients.
- Practical experience in dementia care, delirium management, frailty assessment, falls prevention, osteoporosis care, polypharmacy review and chronic disease management.
- Previous work in tertiary hospitals, rehabilitation centres, long‑term care facilities, academic medical centres or multidisciplinary elderly care services is an advantage.
- Experience developing geriatric care pathways, quality improvement programmes, healthy ageing initiatives or age‑friendly clinical services is preferred.
- Ability to communicate clearly with elderly patients, families, caregivers and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
- Fluency in English is required; Arabic language proficiency will be an advantage.
- Strong leadership, ethical judgement, clinical governance awareness and commitment to compassionate elderly care.
