Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and manage ophthalmic and periocular disorders requiring reconstructive or oculoplastic intervention.
  • Perform eyelid reconstruction following trauma, tumor excision, congenital abnormality, or tissue loss.
  • Undertake functional eyelid procedures for ptosis, ectropion, entropion, retraction, and other eyelid malpositions.
  • Perform lacrimal procedures for tear drainage obstruction and related disorders.
  • Evaluate and surgically manage selected orbital conditions within approved clinical privileges.
  • Provide reconstructive treatment for periocular and orbital trauma.
  • Develop individualized surgical plans based on diagnosis and imaging.
  • Review CT, MRI and other diagnostic imaging relevant to orbital and reconstructive ophthalmic conditions.
  • Deliver pre-operative assessment, counselling, informed consent, and risk discussion.
  • Provide postoperative care and monitor healing and outcomes.

Role Context

The Consultant Ophthalmologist will provide advanced assessment and surgical management for patients with functional and reconstructive disorders affecting the eyelids, orbit, lacrimal system, and surrounding facial structures. The role combines comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation, complex operative planning, reconstructive techniques, postoperative follow-up, and collaboration with related surgical specialties. Through restoration of function, ocular protection, and anatomical integrity, the consultant will help improve visual outcomes, comfort, and quality of life for patients with complex oculoplastic conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and manage ophthalmic and periocular disorders requiring reconstructive or oculoplastic intervention.
  • Conduct comprehensive ophthalmic examinations and assess functional, anatomical, and surgical requirements.
  • Perform eyelid reconstruction following trauma, tumor excision, congenital abnormality, or acquired tissue loss.
  • Undertake functional eyelid procedures for ptosis, ectropion, entropion, retraction, and other eyelid malpositions.
  • Perform lacrimal procedures for tear drainage obstruction and related disorders.
  • Evaluate and surgically manage selected orbital conditions within approved clinical privileges.
  • Provide reconstructive treatment for periocular and orbital trauma.
  • Assess patients with orbital tumors, inflammatory disease, structural abnormalities, and other complex orbital conditions.
  • Manage eyelid and periocular tumors in coordination with pathology, oncology, and other relevant specialists.
  • Develop individualized surgical plans based on diagnosis, anatomy, functional impairment, imaging, and patient needs.
  • Review CT, MRI, and other diagnostic imaging relevant to orbital and reconstructive ophthalmic conditions.
  • Provide pre-operative assessment, procedural counselling, informed consent, and risk discussion.
  • Deliver structured postoperative care and monitor healing, visual function, ocular surface health, and surgical outcomes.
  • Identify and manage postoperative complications promptly and appropriately.
  • Provide outpatient consultation for complex oculoplastic and reconstructive ophthalmology cases.
  • Support inpatient management where patients require multidisciplinary surgical or medical care.
  • Collaborate with ENT surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, and other specialists.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary planning for facial trauma, orbital tumors, and complex reconstructive cases.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment options, surgical expectations, recovery, and long-term follow-up.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records, operative notes, treatment plans, consent documentation, and follow-up information.
  • Contribute to quality improvement, clinical audits, morbidity reviews, and patient-safety programs.
  • Participate in research, teaching, continuing medical education, and professional development.
  • Maintain compliance with UAE healthcare regulations, infection control standards, ethical practice, and internationally recognized clinical guidelines.
Ideal Profile
  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Board Certification or Fellowship in Ophthalmology.
  • Advanced subspecialty training in Oculoplastic or Reconstructive Ophthalmology.
  • Appropriate UAE Consultant license, eligibility letter, or eligibility to obtain the required license.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of post-specialist experience in reconstructive ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery.
  • Strong experience performing advanced eyelid, orbital, and lacrimal procedures.
  • Expertise in functional eyelid reconstruction and correction of eyelid malpositions.
  • Experience managing orbital disorders, periocular tumors, facial trauma, and tear drainage conditions.
  • Exposure to complex orbital and facial reconstruction is highly desirable.
  • Previous practice in a tertiary eye care facility or academic medical center is advantageous.
  • Ability to interpret ophthalmic investigations and relevant orbital imaging.
  • Strong surgical judgment and meticulous operative technique.
  • Effective collaboration with ENT, maxillofacial, plastic surgery, oncology, radiology, and multidisciplinary teams.
