Role Context

The Consultant Neurosurgeon will lead the assessment and surgical management of patients whose neurological conditions require advanced functional and stereotactic intervention. The role focuses on restoring neurological function, reducing disabling symptoms, improving seizure control, managing chronic pain and spasticity, and optimizing quality of life through carefully selected neuromodulation and image‑guided procedures. Close cooperation with movement disorder neurology, epileptology, neurophysiology, neuroradiology, rehabilitation, and allied clinical teams will be central to patient selection and long‑term outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide consultant‑level evaluation for patients being considered for functional neurosurgical intervention.
  • Diagnose and manage neurological disorders requiring stereotactic, ablative, stimulatory, or neuromodulatory procedures.
  • Assess patients with Parkinson 's disease and other movement disorders for surgical suitability.
  • Evaluate tremor, dystonia, and other movement‑related conditions that may benefit from Deep Brain Stimulation.
  • Perform Deep Brain Stimulation procedures within approved clinical privileges.
  • Plan DBS target selection based on diagnosis, imaging, neurological findings, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
  • Perform stereotactic electrode placement using appropriate navigation and targeting systems.
  • Collaborate with neurophysiology and movement disorder teams during intraoperative assessment where required.
  • Participate in postoperative DBS programming pathways in coordination with neurology teams.
  • Monitor surgical outcomes and identify hardware, stimulation, neurological, or wound‑related complications.
  • Evaluate patients with medically refractory epilepsy for surgical treatment.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary epilepsy surgery assessment and case selection.
  • Review seizure semiology, imaging, electrophysiology, neuropsychological findings, and other diagnostic data.
  • Perform appropriate epilepsy surgery procedures according to training and clinical privileges.
  • Support stereotactic and neuromodulatory approaches for selected epilepsy patients.
  • Perform vagus nerve stimulation procedures where clinically indicated.
  • Assess candidates for other neurostimulation technologies as appropriate.
  • Evaluate patients with severe chronic pain that may benefit from neuromodulation.
  • Perform spinal cord stimulation procedures within approved scope and expertise.
  • Coordinate patient selection for pain neuromodulation with pain medicine and rehabilitation teams.
  • Assess patients with spasticity requiring functional neurosurgical treatment.
  • Consider lesioning procedures for selected neurological conditions when supported by clinical evidence.
  • Perform advanced stereotactic procedures using image‑guided techniques.
  • Use neuronavigation systems for operative planning and procedural accuracy.
  • Integrate MRI, CT, and other neuroimaging into surgical targeting and trajectory planning.
  • Apply image fusion and stereotactic planning techniques when required.
  • Review functional imaging and electrophysiological data relevant to surgical decision‑making.
  • Conduct comprehensive preoperative neurological and surgical assessments.
  • Evaluate comorbidities, medication history, cognitive status, functional impairment, and surgical risk.
  • Determine whether patients are suitable for surgery through multidisciplinary review.
  • Explain procedure indications, alternatives, expected benefits, limitations, and potential complications.
  • Obtain informed consent in accordance with UAE healthcare regulations and institutional standards.
  • Develop individualized operative strategies for complex functional neurosurgical cases.
  • Coordinate operating room requirements for stereotactic and neuromodulation procedures.
  • Work closely with anesthesiology regarding awake, sedated, or general anesthesia techniques where appropriate.
  • Maintain precise intraoperative documentation and operative records.
  • Monitor neurological status following surgery.
  • Provide structured postoperative management for patients undergoing DBS, epilepsy surgery, neuromodulation, or stereotactic intervention.
