Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
  • Completion of an accredited Neurosurgery Residency Program.
  • Board Certification in Neurosurgery.
  • Fellowship training in Functional Neurosurgery, Stereotactic Neurosurgery, or advanced neurosurgical techniques.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialisation clinical experience in neurosurgery.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate patients with movement disorders, epilepsy, chronic pain, spasticity, and other conditions requiring functional neurosurgical assessment.
  • Determine suitability for surgical intervention through detailed clinical review, imaging, neurophysiological testing, and multidisciplinary discussion.
  • Perform Deep Brain Stimulation procedures for appropriately selected neurological conditions.
  • Conduct stereotactic and lesioning procedures according to clinical indication and established neurosurgical standards.
  • Perform or supervise spinal cord stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, and other neuromodulation therapies when appropriate.
  • Participate in surgical management of selected epilepsy cases requiring functional neurosurgical intervention.
  • Use neuronavigation, stereotactic systems, and image-guided techniques for accurate operative targeting.
  • Develop individualized perioperative treatment plans based on neurological diagnosis, functional status, imaging, and expected treatment benefit.
  • Work closely with neurologists, epileptologists, neurophysiologists, neuroradiologists, anesthesiologists, and rehabilitation specialists.
  • Provide comprehensive postoperative assessment and monitor neurological response, device-related issues, surgical recovery, and complications.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary neuroscience clinics and complex case conferences.
  • Contribute neurosurgical expertise to tumor boards or other specialist meetings when relevant.
  • Provide on-call neurosurgical support and participate in emergency neurosurgical care as required.
  • Maintain detailed clinical records, operative reports, consent documentation, treatment plans, and follow-up notes.
  • Supervise residents, fellows, junior neurosurgeons, and medical students while supporting advanced clinical training.
  • Participate in clinical audits, patient safety programs, infection prevention initiatives, and quality improvement activities.
  • Contribute to research projects, peer-reviewed publications, academic teaching, and professional neuroscience education.
  • Maintain current knowledge of advances in functional neurosurgery, neuromodulation, minimally invasive techniques, and stereotactic technology.

Role Context

The Consultant Functional Neurosurgeon will provide advanced assessment and surgical treatment for patients with movement disorders, epilepsy, chronic pain, spasticity, and other neurological conditions that may benefit from functional neurosurgical intervention.
