Role Overview

Consultant - Neonatology – Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A senior physician position in neonatal intensive care, premature newborn management, advanced resuscitation, and ventilator support within a LevelIII or LevelIV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The role requires a minimum of 5 years of consultant‑level experience and involves comprehensive care for critically ill, high‑risk newborns, including delivery‑room stabilization, advanced airway management, invasive procedures, respiratory support, infection management, nutritional planning, and long‑term coordination with multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consultant‑level care for premature, critically ill, and high‑risk newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
• Assess and manage neonatal respiratory distress, apnea, chronic lung disease, and respiratory failure.
• Diagnose and treat neonatal sepsis, meningitis, and other serious infections.
• Manage congenital anomalies, metabolic disorders, neurological conditions, and complications of prematurity.
• Lead neonatal resuscitation and emergency stabilization in delivery rooms and neonatal units.
• Perform endotracheal intubation and provide advanced airway management.
• Insert umbilical arterial and venous catheters when clinically indicated.
• Establish central venous access and other invasive monitoring lines.
• Initiate and manage conventional ventilation, non‑invasive respiratory support, and advanced ventilator strategies.
• Monitor blood gases, oxygenation, circulation, fluid balance, and treatment response.
• Develop individualized treatment plans based on gestational age, birth weight, diagnosis, and clinical severity.
• Coordinate nutritional support, including enteral feeding and parenteral nutrition.
• Manage jaundice, hypoglycemia, electrolyte disturbances, and neonatal hematological conditions.
• Provide antenatal counselling for high‑risk pregnancies and anticipated neonatal complications.
• Explain prognosis, treatment options, procedures, and potential outcomes to parents and families.
• Support family participation in neonatal care and provide compassionate guidance during critical illness.
• Conduct daily multidisciplinary NICU rounds and review treatment priorities.
• Collaborate with obstetricians, pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, neurologists, and other pediatric specialists.
• Coordinate neonatal transfers, specialist referrals, and escalation to advanced services when required.
• Supervise junior physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, and neonatal clinical staff.
• Mentor team members in neonatal assessment, resuscitation, ventilation, and emergency care.
• Ensure compliance with NICU protocols, infection prevention standards, and medication safety procedures.
• Monitor central line care, ventilator‑associated risks, antimicrobial use, and hospital‑acquired infection indicators.
• Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, incident investigations, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Contribute to neonatal clinical pathway development, protocol updates, and patient safety programs.
• Maintain accurate progress notes, procedure records, treatment plans, discharge summaries, and follow‑up documentation.
• Participate in research, publications, presentations, and continuing medical education activities.
• Support departmental teaching, simulation training, and professional development programs.
• Maintain professional competence in neonatal‑perinatal medicine and emerging intensive care technologies.
• Uphold confidentiality, ethical practice, clinical governance, and family‑centered care standards.

Ideal Profile

• MBBS, MD, or an equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution.
• Board certification or an equivalent recognised qualification in Pediatrics.
• Fellowship or subspecialty certification in Neonatology or Neonatal‑Perinatal Medicine.
• Minimum 5 years of experience practising as a Consultant Neonatologist.
• Experience gained within a LevelIII or LevelIV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
• Eligibility for consultant‑level medical licensing in the United Arab Emirates.
• Western board certification such as UK CCT, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship, or an equivalent qualification is preferred.
• Extensive experience managing premature, critically ill, and high‑risk newborns.
• Strong competence in neonatal resuscitation, intubation, invasive line placement, and ventilator management.
• Experience managing neonatal sepsis, respiratory distress, metabolic disorders, congenital anomalies, and complications of prematurity.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification or an equivalent qualification is preferred.
• Strong clinical judgment and ability to make rapid decisions in neonatal emergencies.
• Proven leadership and multidisciplinary team coordination skills.
• Excellent communication and counselling abilities with parents and families.
• Experience supervising junior physicians, fellows, residents, and NICU nurses.
• Research, teaching, audit, or academic involvement in neonatology is advantageous.
• Ability to work effectively within a high‑volume and multicultural healthcare environment.
