Overview

The Consultant Neonatologist - NICU in Dubai, United Arab Emirates will provide advanced medical care for premature, critically ill, and high-risk newborns while supporting a leading healthcare organization in Saudi Arabia. This senior physician role requires extensive experience in Level III or Level IV neonatal intensive care, neonatal resuscitation, ventilator management, emergency stabilization, and multidisciplinary neonatal medicine.

Role Summary

Provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and emergency care for premature infants and newborns with complex medical or surgical conditions. Managed within an advanced neonatal intensive care service in Saudi Arabia, the consultant will address respiratory distress, neonatal sepsis, congenital anomalies, metabolic disorders, birth complications, and conditions associated with extreme prematurity. Leadership during neonatal emergencies, antenatal counseling, supervision of junior staff, participation in multidisciplinary rounds, and contribution to clinical governance, research, teaching, and quality improvement are included.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide consultant-level care for premature, critically ill, and medically complex newborns in a Level III or Level IV NICU.
  • Diagnose and manage neonatal respiratory distress, sepsis, congenital anomalies, metabolic disorders, neonatal jaundice, neurological conditions, and complications of prematurity.
  • Assess newborns immediately after delivery and initiate appropriate stabilization, monitoring, and treatment.
  • Lead neonatal resuscitation and emergency response activities in delivery rooms, operating theatres, emergency departments, and neonatal units.
  • Perform endotracheal intubation, umbilical arterial and venous line placement, central venous access, chest drainage, lumbar puncture, and other advanced neonatal procedures.
  • Manage invasive and non-invasive ventilation, oxygen therapy, high-frequency ventilation, and respiratory support strategies.
  • Monitor neonatal fluid balance, nutrition, medications, blood gases, hemodynamic status, and organ function.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on gestational age, birth weight, clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, and evidence-based neonatal guidelines.
  • Manage infants with extreme prematurity, low birth weight, neonatal infections, birth asphyxia, congenital disorders, and complex multisystem conditions.
  • Coordinate care for newborns requiring neonatal surgery, cardiac intervention, specialist imaging, or advanced subspecialty support.
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine physicians, pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatric subspecialists, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and NICU nurses.
  • Provide antenatal counseling to parents facing high-risk pregnancies, premature delivery, congenital abnormalities, or expected neonatal complications.
  • Explain diagnoses, treatment options, prognosis, risks, and care plans clearly and compassionately to parents and families.
  • Lead multidisciplinary NICU rounds and ensure timely clinical decision-making, treatment review, and care coordination.
  • Support infection prevention measures, antimicrobial stewardship, medication safety, and neonatal patient identification protocols.
  • Ensure adherence to NICU policies, neonatal safety standards, hospital procedures, and applicable Saudi healthcare regulations.
  • Maintain accurate admission notes, daily progress records, procedure documentation, medication charts, discharge summaries, and follow-up plans.
  • Coordinate neonatal discharge planning, developmental follow-up, family education, and referrals to specialist services.
  • Supervise and mentor junior physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Deliver bedside teaching, case discussions, simulation training, and continuing medical education activities.
  • Participate in neonatal morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, incident investigations, and quality improvement projects.
  • Contribute to the development of NICU protocols, clinical pathways, emergency procedures, and patient-safety programs.
  • Support neonatal research, data collection, academic presentations, clinical publications, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
  • Maintain professional competence through conferences, certification programs, specialist training, and continuous medical education.
Ideal Profile
  • Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or an equivalent qualification from an accredited institution.
  • Completed residency training and board certification in Pediatrics.
  • Fellowship or recognized subspecialty certification in Neonatology or Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
  • Eligibility for consultant registration and licensing with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience practicing as a Consultant Neonatologist.
  • Extensive clinical experience in a Level III or Level IV neonatal intensive care unit.
  • Western board certification such as UK CCT, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship, or an equivalent qualification is strongly preferred.
  • Advanced expertise in neonatal resuscitation, airway management, mechanical ventilation, and emergency stabilization.
  • Proven ability to manage premature, extremely low-birth-weight, critically ill, and high-risk newborns.
  • Practical competence in neonatal intubation, umbilical line placement, central venous access, and other intensive care procedures.
  • Experience working in a tertiary-care hospital or high-volume neonatal center is preferred.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification or an equivalent qualification is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of neonatal physiology, pharmacology, nutrition, respiratory support, infection management, and developmental care.
  • Experience in neonatal teaching, clinical research, audits, or academic medicine would be advantageous.
  • Excellent clinical judgment, leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
  • Ability to communicate difficult or sensitive information to parents with empathy and professionalism.
  • Strong commitment to family-centered care, patient safety, ethical practice, and evidence-based neonatology.
