Role Context The Consultant Neonatologist provides advanced medical care for newborns requiring intensive monitoring, life support and complex treatment during the earliest and most vulnerable stage of life. The role covers premature infants, critically ill neonates, high-risk deliveries and newborns affected by respiratory, infectious, congenital and metabolic conditions. The consultant has a major influence on survival, stabilization and long-term neonatal outcomes by combining rapid clinical decision-making with advanced procedures and coordinated multidisciplinary care. The position also supports NICU quality standards, staff development, clinical governance and continuous improvement of neonatal services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide consultant-level care for premature, critically ill and medically complex newborns in the NICU.
  • Assess high-risk neonates immediately after birth and determine the level of intensive care required.
  • Diagnose and manage neonatal respiratory distress and related complications.
  • Treat neonatal sepsis and other serious infections using evidence-based protocols.
  • Evaluate congenital anomalies and coordinate further specialist assessment when necessary.
  • Manage metabolic disorders affecting newborns.
  • Treat complications associated with prematurity and low birth weight.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on gestational age, diagnosis and physiological status.
  • Continuously reassess neonatal progress and adjust management according to clinical response.
  • Perform advanced neonatal resuscitation in delivery rooms and intensive care settings.
  • Lead stabilization of newborns experiencing acute respiratory or cardiovascular deterioration.
  • Perform endotracheal intubation when invasive airway support is required.
  • Manage conventional and advanced mechanical ventilation strategies.
  • Insert umbilical arterial and venous lines according to clinical indications.
  • Establish central venous access for critically ill neonatal patients.
  • Monitor respiratory support, oxygenation and ventilation parameters closely.
  • Coordinate escalation of life-support measures for unstable neonates.
  • Lead emergency response during neonatal deterioration and critical events.
  • Provide antenatal counseling for families facing high-risk pregnancy or expected neonatal complications.
  • Explain potential neonatal outcomes, treatment options and intensive care requirements to parents.
  • Collaborate with obstetricians before and during high-risk deliveries.
  • Work closely with pediatric subspecialists when complex organ-specific conditions are identified.
  • Coordinate care with pediatric surgeons for congenital or surgical neonatal conditions.
  • Collaborate with anesthesiologists during procedures requiring advanced perioperative support.
  • Lead and participate in multidisciplinary NICU rounds.
  • Work closely with specialized NICU nursing teams to maintain consistent bedside care.
  • Support safe transition planning when neonates are ready for step-down care or discharge.
  • Maintain strict compliance with NICU clinical protocols.
  • Apply infection prevention measures throughout neonatal intensive care practice.
  • Promote patient safety and early recognition of preventable complications.
  • Supervise junior physicians, residents and fellows during neonatal care.
  • Provide clinical guidance and teaching to NICU nursing staff.
  • Support structured learning and professional development within the department.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews and clinical case discussions.
  • Contribute to neonatal quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in clinical audits focused on outcomes, safety and service performance.

Ideal Profile

The position requires an MBBS or equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution together with Board Certification in Pediatrics. Candidates must also hold Fellowship or recognized Subspecialty Certification in Neonatology or Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. A minimum of five years of experience practicing at Consultant Neonatologist level in a Level III or Level IV NICU is required. The successful physician should demonstrate extensive experience in advanced neonatal resuscitation, airway management, ventilator support and invasive neonatal procedures. Strong clinical judgment is essential when managing premature infants, critically ill newborns, congenital abnormalities, neonatal sepsis, metabolic disease and complications of prematurity. Experience within tertiary-care hospitals or high-volume neonatal intensive care services is highly desirable. Western Board Certification such as UK CCT, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship or an equivalent qualification would provide a strong advantage. Certification in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program or an equivalent recognized neonatal resuscitation course is preferred. Academic involvement, teaching experience and participation in neonatal research would further strengthen suitability for the position. Candidates should meet the professional licensing or eligibility requirements applicable to consultant neonatology practice in the United Arab Emirates.
