Role Context

The Consultant - Neonatal Intensive Care will lead clinical management for newborns requiring intensive monitoring, respiratory support, invasive procedures, nutritional care, infection management, and complex multidisciplinary treatment. The role spans delivery-room stabilization, Level III or Level IV NICU care, antenatal counselling, emergency response, and long-term neonatal planning. Close collaboration with obstetricians, pediatric subspecialists, pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and allied teams will support safer outcomes for extremely premature and medically fragile infants.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consultant-level care for premature, critically ill, and high-risk newborns admitted to the NICU.
• Assess and manage respiratory distress syndrome and other neonatal respiratory disorders.
• Diagnose and treat neonatal sepsis and serious neonatal infections.
• Manage complications associated with prematurity and very low birth weight.
• Evaluate newborns with congenital anomalies requiring specialist investigation or multidisciplinary treatment.
• Manage neonatal metabolic disorders and disturbances affecting critically ill infants.
• Lead delivery-room resuscitation for newborns requiring advanced stabilization.
• Perform endotracheal intubation and advanced neonatal airway management.
• Insert umbilical arterial and venous lines where clinically indicated.
• Establish central venous access according to approved clinical privileges.
• Initiate and manage invasive and non-invasive ventilatory support.
• Adjust respiratory therapy according to blood gases, oxygenation, lung mechanics, and clinical response.
• Manage complex neonatal ventilation and respiratory deterioration.
• Coordinate cardiovascular support, fluid management, electrolyte correction, and nutritional planning.
• Develop individualized treatment plans according to gestational age, diagnosis, clinical severity, and prognosis.
• Monitor neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, and developmental status throughout NICU admission.
• Recognize neonatal emergencies and direct rapid escalation of treatment.
• Lead stabilization of deteriorating infants within delivery rooms and neonatal units.
• Participate in antenatal counselling for families facing high-risk delivery, extreme prematurity, congenital anomalies, or anticipated neonatal complications.
• Explain prognosis, treatment options, expected NICU course, and potential complications clearly to parents.
• Collaborate with obstetricians during high-risk pregnancies and complex deliveries.
• Coordinate neonatal care with pediatric cardiology, neurology, surgery, genetics, infectious disease, and other subspecialties.
• Work closely with pediatric surgeons for newborns requiring operative intervention.
• Collaborate with anesthesiology teams during procedures and perioperative neonatal care.
• Lead multidisciplinary NICU rounds and establish daily treatment priorities.
• Ensure compliance with neonatal infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship practices.
• Maintain rigorous standards for central-line safety, ventilator care, medication administration, and neonatal monitoring.
• Supervise junior physicians, residents, fellows, and NICU nursing staff.
• Provide bedside teaching and clinical guidance during high-acuity neonatal cases.
• Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audit, and NICU outcome analysis.
• Support quality improvement programs aimed at reducing neonatal complications and improving survival and developmental outcomes.
• Contribute to neonatal protocols, departmental policies, clinical pathways, and patient-safety initiatives.
• Participate in research, academic activities, continuing medical education, and departmental development.
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with UAE healthcare and hospital requirements.

Ideal Profile

• MBBS or an equivalent recognized medical degree from an accredited institution.
• Board Certification in Pediatrics.
• Fellowship or recognized subspecialty certification in Neonatology or Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
• Valid UAE professional license or eligibility for appropriate consultant licensing in Dubai.
• Minimum 5 years of experience practicing as a Consultant Neonatologist.
• Substantial experience in a Level III or Level IV NICU.
• Extensive expertise in the care of premature and critically ill newborns.
• Advanced competence in neonatal resuscitation and delivery-room stabilization.
• Strong experience with neonatal mechanical ventilation and respiratory support.
• Demonstrated procedural competence in neonatal intubation, umbilical line placement, and central venous access.
• Strong clinical judgment in high-risk and rapidly changing neonatal situations.
• Experience managing neonatal sepsis, congenital abnormalities, metabolic disorders, and complications of prematurity.
• Previous practice in a tertiary-care hospital or high-volume NICU is highly desirable.
• Western Board Certification such as UK CCT, American Board, Canadian Fellowship, Australian Fellowship, or equivalent is preferred.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification or equivalent is advantageous.
• Research, teaching, and academic involvement in neonatology are desirable.
• Strong leadership and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
• Excellent communication and family counselling abilities.
• Commitment to evidence-based neonatal care, infection prevention, clinical governance, and continuous professional development.
