The Classroom Assistant provides direct academic and pastoral support to pupils who may require additional guidance during lessons, group activities, transitions, or wider school routines. Working closely with class teachers, the assistant helps students remain engaged, complete assigned work, develop confidence, and participate fully in the school day. The position also supports teachers with practical classroom administration, pupil records, attendance, learning resources, displays, and monitoring of student progress. By providing consistent assistance to individual learners and small groups, the role helps strengthen classroom inclusion, teaching effectiveness, student wellbeing, and positive behaviour.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support individual pupils and small groups inside and outside the classroom.
  • Help students participate fully in academic, social, emotional, and physical activities during the school day.
  • Provide academic assistance according to instructions and learning objectives set by the class teacher.
  • Deliver small-group or individual instruction when prescribed by the teacher.
  • Demonstrate learning activities and explain tasks using appropriate classroom guidance.
  • Monitor work assigned by teachers and support pupils while activities are in progress.
  • Check and correct student work within the parameters established by teaching staff.
  • Help pupils remain focused, organised, and actively engaged in learning.
  • Recognise and reinforce student achievement through positive encouragement.
  • Report observations about student progress, challenges, and participation to the class teacher.
  • Assist with the implementation of individual education programmes for pupils requiring additional support.
  • Help monitor progress against individual learning objectives and intervention plans.
  • Support students experiencing emotional, behavioural, social, or additional educational needs.
  • Encourage the development of confidence, independence, communication, and positive social skills.
  • Supervise pupils in classrooms, corridors, activity areas, and other designated school locations.
  • Apply school behaviour expectations consistently and support appropriate responses to misconduct.
  • Promote student self-esteem while reinforcing respectful behaviour and personal responsibility.
  • Assist class teachers with maintaining pupil records and relevant classroom documentation.
  • Check attendance and communicate discrepancies according to school procedures.
  • Prepare classroom resources, photocopies, worksheets, materials, and visual displays.
  • Present examples of pupil work to support a stimulating and positive learning environment.
  • Reorganise materials, equipment, and classroom resources at the end of lessons or the school day.
  • Maintain awareness of health and safety requirements and respond proactively to possible risks.
  • Follow school policies, safeguarding expectations, health and safety requirements, and relevant legislation.
  • Maintain high standards of punctuality, attendance, professional appearance, and workplace conduct.
  • Attend team meetings and staff meetings when required.
  • Work collaboratively with speech therapists, occupational therapists, and other specialist professionals when appropriate.
  • Support the wider aims, values, and educational priorities of the school.
  • Undertake additional reasonable duties assigned by the Principal.

Ideal Profile Candidates should hold at least a secondary school certificate. Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of experience working in a school environment. Appropriate English language skills are required, or proficiency in the principal language used within the school curriculum.
