Role Context
The technician will inspect vehicles, diagnose basic mechanical and electronic faults, complete approved repairs, and identify additional work that may be required. Reporting to the Service Supervisor, the position requires accurate repair documentation, safe use of tools, careful handling of vehicle parts and consistent compliance with workshop procedures. Performance will be measured through productivity, repair quality, customer satisfaction, punctuality and the reduction of repeat work.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform servicing and mechanical repairs on passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.
- Complete engine oil and filter changes according to vehicle specifications.
- Carry out tyre replacement, wheel balancing, puncture repair and tyre‑condition inspections.
- Inspect, repair and replace braking‑system components where required.
- Perform routine maintenance, component replacement and basic mechanical repairs.
- Complete air‑conditioning re‑gas services and preliminary system checks.
- Use diagnostic tools to identify basic mechanical and electronic faults.
- Carry out electronic vehicle inspections and record identified defects.
- Follow manufacturer repair procedures, workshop instructions and company quality standards.
- Complete vehicle check sheets, inspection records and repair‑order write‑ups accurately.
- Record all work performed, parts fitted, faults identified and recommendations made.
- Conduct electronic vehicle health checks and report additional repairs required.
- Prepare repair and service estimates for customers when requested.
- Explain identified faults and recommended work in clear language where customer interaction is required.
- Use intelligent testers, scan tools and approved special‑service equipment.
- Handle specialist tools correctly and return them to the designated storage area.
- Maintain personal tools, diagnostic equipment and service materials in good working condition.
- Keep the assigned company vehicle properly organised and equipped according to operating standards.
- Monitor parts inventory carried in the service vehicle.
- Return unused parts and maintain accurate parts‑control records.
- Protect customer vehicles and maintain cleanliness throughout the repair process.
- Conduct final inspections and quality tests before releasing completed vehicles.
- Verify that repairs have resolved the reported concern and that the vehicle operates safely.
- Apply correct diagnostic procedures to reduce repeat repairs and unnecessary component replacement.
- Escalate faults that require advanced diagnosis or specialist technical support.
- Maintain high first‑time repair performance and minimise customer complaints.
- Organise daily work to achieve assigned productivity and efficiency targets.
- Manage time on each repair so scheduled jobs are completed within the working day.
- Arrive punctually at workshop assignments or customer service locations.
- Maintain safe working practices in the workshop and mobile‑service environment.
- Handle oil, brake fluid, chemicals and other controlled substances in accordance with environmental procedures.
- Maintain good housekeeping within the immediate work area and company vehicle.
- Report safety concerns, damaged equipment and operational risks to the Service Supervisor.
- Support colleagues when workshop demand or technical requirements require teamwork.
Ideal Profile
- Trade certificate or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Automotive Technology or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of practical experience servicing passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.
- Proven technical ability in independent vehicle servicing, mechanical repair and component replacement.
- Multi‑brand automotive service centre experience is essential.
- Strong working knowledge of core vehicle systems – engines, brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, cooling and air conditioning.
- Basic diagnostic capability covering mechanical and electronic vehicle faults.
- Experience using scan tools, intelligent testers, workshop equipment and digital inspection systems.
- Ability to interpret service procedures, technical instructions and manufacturer specifications.
- Good understanding of preventive maintenance and repair‑quality controls.
- Ability to identify additional repairs during vehicle inspections.
- Experience completing repair orders, inspection sheets, job cards and service reports.
- Strong commitment to first‑time‑right repair standards.
- Ability to work efficiently in a high‑volume workshop environment.
- Good time management, punctuality, organisation and attention to detail.
- Understanding of workshop health, safety, environmental and housekeeping requirements.
