Position Overview
The Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining automated systems and processes that improve efficiency, reliability, and performance. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify automation opportunities, develop technical solutions, and ensure seamless integration with existing workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Development Develop and implement automation solutions using PLCs, SCADA, robotics, scripting, or software automation tools. Create detailed system designs, electrical schematics, logic diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Testing & Validation Conduct system testing, troubleshooting, and validation of automated equipment or scripts. Ensure automated processes meet performance, quality, and safety standards.
- Maintenance & Optimization Monitor system performance to identify areas for optimization. Maintain and upgrade automation systems, including hardware and software updates.
- Collaboration & Support Work with production, IT, quality and engineering teams to support automation projects. Provide training and technical guidance to operators and team members.
- Compliance & Safety Ensure all automated solutions comply with industry regulations, company policies, and safety standards. Contribute to risk assessments and mitigation planning.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineer, or related field.
- Experience with one or more automation platforms (e.g., PLC: Allen-Bradley, Siemens; SCADA: Wonderware, Ignition).
- Proficiency in programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text, Python, or scripting tools.
- Strong understanding of industrial automation, control systems, and communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, OPC).
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with industrial robotics (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, UR).
- Knowledge of DevOps or software test automation frameworks (Selenium, Playwright, CI/CD pipelines) if role is software-focused.
- Familiarity with MES, ERP integration, or data acquisition systems.
- Professional certifications (e.g., CAP, CCST) are a plus.
Typical Tools & Technologies
- PLC programming tools (Studio 5000, TIA Portal)
- SCADA/HMI platforms (Ignition, FactoryTalk View, WinCC)
- Knowledge in boiler PLC or SCADA can do troubleshooting including the field.
- Version control (Git)
- Industrial sensors, actuators, and instrumentation, calibration
Work Environment
Combination of office, workshop, and site environments. May require travel for project execution and commissioning. Involves working around industrial equipment and machinery.
