Job summary

Paarl-based Viticulture Researcher position with Placements24, focusing on advancing grape cultivation through rigorous experiments, data analysis, and sustainable practices. You will explore varietals, improve irrigation and canopy management, and collaborate with local winemakers to apply findings to real-world vineyard challenges in the Western Cape.

The role requires strong publication record or project experience, expertise in grapevine physiology and soil science, and proficiency in R/SAS.

Qualifications

• Master’s or PhD degree in Viticulture, Plant Science, Agronomy, or closely related field.
• Proven research experience with publications or completed projects.
• In-depth knowledge of grapevine physiology, genetics, soil science, and plant pathology.
• Proficiency in statistical analysis software (R, SAS) and experimental design.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research setting.
• Experience in the South African wine industry and Paarl context is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design and conduct scientific experiments to investigate factors influencing grape quality, yield, and disease resistance.
• Analyze experimental data using statistical methods and interpret results to draw meaningful conclusions.
• Develop and test innovative viticultural practices, including new irrigation, fertilization, and canopy management techniques.
• Collaborate with vineyard managers and winemakers to translate research findings into practical applications.
• Stay updated on the latest scientific literature, research methodologies, and technological advancements in viticulture.
• Prepare research reports, scientific publications, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
• Manage research plots and experimental vineyards in and around Paarl, ensuring accurate data collection.
