Job summary

Sappi Southern Africa is seeking a Technical Training Officer - Instrumentation to lead accredited instrumentation training for apprentices and artisans, plus unaccredited short courses for local communities. You will manage training schedules, update materials, and ensure outcomes align with industry standards.

You will also facilitate classes, monitor progress, and coordinate assessments, certificates, and LMS records under QCTO guidelines.

Qualifications

• 5 years experience as an Artisan in a manufacturing environment.
• OD ETDP qualification; Assessor and Moderator would be advantageous.
• Experience as a Training Facilitator would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Develop and manage training demand schedules for all programmes delivered through the Skills Centre.
• Review and maintain training materials and assessment instruments to ensure compliance with instructional design principles, quality standards, and learning outcomes.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of training programmes, learning systems, and processes to enhance training effectiveness and learner outcomes.
• Facilitate both theoretical and practical training interventions for apprentices, community trainees, and mill personnel.
• Monitor apprentice progress, provide coaching and mentorship, and implement development plans.
• Conduct assessment and moderation activities for apprentice portfolios and training documentation per QCTO requirements.
• Administer apprentice certificates and course reports, ensuring accurate records and approved modules.
• Prepare and maintain documentation for SETA regulatory bodies.

We’re on the lookout for an experienced Technical Training Officer - Instrumentation to conduct accredited instrumentation training for apprentices, artisans, and skilled engineering employees and to conduct unaccredited instrumentation short courses for the local communities around Sappi operations.

As a Technical Training Officer - Instrumentation , you will be responsible for:

• Developing and managing training demand schedules for all programmes delivered through the Skills Centre, including community short courses, apprenticeship programmes, and technical training for mill employees.
• Reviewing, developing, and maintaining training materials and assessment instruments to ensure compliance with instructional design principles, quality standards, and learning outcomes, including practical, formative, and summative assessments.
• Contributing to the continuous improvement of training programmes, learning systems, and operational processes to enhance training effectiveness and learner outcomes.
• Facilitating both theoretical and practical training interventions for apprentices, community trainees, and mill personnel to support skills development and operational competency.
• Monitoring apprentice progress, providing coaching and mentorship, and implementing development plans to support successful programme completion, supported by the apprentice curriculum on the Sappi Learning Management System (LMS).
• Conducting assessment and moderation activities for apprentice portfolios and training documentation in accordance with Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) requirements and accreditation standards.
• Administering the apprentice certificates and course reports, ensuring accurate records are maintained, and training modules are signed off in line with learner progression requirements.
• Preparing, compiling, and maintaining all documentation required for submission to relevant Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) and regulatory bodies.
• Managing training equipment, tools, and consumables, including forecasting requirements, maintaining inventory levels, and coordinating the procurement of replacement stock when required.
• Building training rigs aligned with new technology and plant requirements.
• Conducting regular inspections and maintenance of training equipment and apprentice tools, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.
• Promoting and maintaining discipline, professionalism, and adherence to Sappi policies, including addressing behavioural concerns promptly and appropriately.
• Collaborating with engineering and operational teams to ensure the necessary authorisations, resources, and supervision for workplace based training activities and practical assignments, are in place.
• Performing Skills Centre inspections, audits, maintenance and adherence to safety.
• Maintaining and supporting all accreditation, quality assurance, and compliance requirements of the Skills Centre, ensuring ongoing alignment with QCTO standards and other applicable regulatory frameworks.

What are we looking for?

• 5 years experience as an Artisan in a manufacturing environment
• Qualification with a OD ETDP, Assessor and Moderator would be advantageous
• Experience as a Training Facilitator would be advantageous
