Job summary

Sappi is seeking a Process Relief Operator- Chemical to support production by providing leave and training relief. The role covers operating process equipment safely, relieving other operators, conducting handovers, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Ideal candidates have Matric with Maths & Physical Science or N3 in Pulp and Paper, with a Diploma being advantageous. Training and travel opportunities are offered within a global organisation.

Qualifications

• Matric with Maths & Physical Science is required.
• N3 in Pulp and Paper is beneficial.
• National Diploma in Pulp and Paper/Chemical Engineering or related fields advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Operate process equipment safely and efficiently in line with SOPs and production requirements.
• Relieve operators across identified Chemical positions and perform duties of the relieved positions.
• Conduct effective shift handovers and ensure accurate recording and communication of operational activities and incidents.
• Monitor equipment and report breakdowns, faults and abnormalities; assist with troubleshooting.
• Support operational interventions and participate in continuous improvement activities.
• Comply with SHEQ requirements and maintain a safe working environment.
• Maintain high housekeeping standards and participate in training and development activities.

Education

Matric (Grade 12) with Maths & Physical Science

N3 in Pulp and Paper

National Diploma in Pulp and Paper/Chemical Engineering or related fields (advantageous)

We’re on the lookout for a Process Relief Operator- Chemical to assist production in reducing overtime by providing leave/training relief.

As a Process Relief Operator- Chemical, you will be responsible for:

• Operate process equipment safely and efficiently in accordance with standard operating procedures, best operating practices and production requirements.
• Relieve operators across identified Chemical positions and perform all duties and responsibilities associated with the positions being relieved.
• Conduct effective shift handovers and ensure accurate recording and communication of operational activities, incidents, abnormalities and outstanding work.
• Monitor equipment and report breakdowns, faults and abnormalities to the Foreman/Operating Staff, assisting with troubleshooting and corrective actions where required.
• Support operational interventions and problem-solving initiatives, including participation in 5-Why investigations and other continuous improvement activities.
• Comply with all SHEQ requirements by identifying and addressing unsafe conditions and hazards, conducting BBS observations, and maintaining a safe working environment.
• Maintain high standards of housekeeping and workplace organisation in accordance with the required operational and housekeeping standards.
• Participate in training, coaching and development activities by attending progress meetings, completing required interventions and acting on feedback to build section-specific skills and competencies.

What are we looking for?

• Matric (Grade 12) with Maths & Physical Science or N3 in Pulp and Paper.
• National Diploma in Pulp and Paper/Chemical Engineering or related fields will be advantageous.
• Minimum of 0-3 months experience as Process Trainee/Production Intern.
