Job summary

FHI Consulting Engineers in Cape Town seeks a capable Structural Engineer to join our growing team. You will design and analyse concrete, steel, masonry and timber structures, prepare calculations and reports, and coordinate with architects and other consultants.

The role requires a BEng/BSc in Civil Engineering (structure) and a minimum of three years’ experience in a consulting environment, with knowledge of SA regulations and Revit/AutoCAD or similar BIM tools.

Qualifications

FHI Consulting Engineers is growing. With an expanding project portfolio and increased demand for our services, we are creating a new permanent position for a capable and detail-driven Structural Engineer to join our Cape Town team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, analysis and delivery of safe, practical and cost-effective structural solutions across a range of building and infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Design and analyse reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry and timber structures
• Prepare structural calculations, specifications, reports and technical documentation
• Develop structural concepts and practical construction solutions
• Review drawings and coordinate structural requirements with architects and other consultants
• Conduct site inspections and assess construction quality and compliance
• Identify structural risks and resolve technical issues during design and construction
• Attend project, design and site meetings
• Monitor projects against the agreed scope, programme and budget
• Ensure designs comply with applicable SANS standards, building regulations and engineering codes
• Provide technical guidance to technicians and draughting staff where required
• Maintain clear communication with clients, contractors and project stakeholders
• BEng or BSc degree in Civil Engineering, with a focus on structural engineering
• A minimum of three years’ relevant structural design experience within a consulting engineering environment
• Working knowledge of South African building regulations and structural design standards
• Experience designing concrete, steel, masonry and timber structures
• Proficiency in structural analysis and design software, specifically PROKON SUMO and all PROKON design modules
• Ability to interpret and review architectural and engineering drawings
• Strong technical writing, problem-solving and communication skills
• A valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites
• Experience conducting site inspections and attending site meetings
• Experience working on residential, commercial and industrial developments
• Knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD or similar drafting and BIM software
• Experience with structural assessments, renovations and remedial work
