Job summary

Abantu Staffing Solutions is seeking a skilled Solar Installation Technician in Gauteng to lead end-to-end photovoltaic projects, from site prep to commissioning. You will install equipment, set up monitoring, and ensure compliance with design specs and safety standards.

The ideal candidate has electric certification, up to three years of solar experience, and familiarity with inverters, BMS data, and ERP/MES tools. Travel to project sites and strong collaboration with supervisors are expected.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 and National Diploma qualifications in electrical engineering.
• Red Seal Electrician certification with PV green card preferred.
• Up to 3 years solar installation experience on roof and ground-mount.
• Experience with micro and string inverters and monitoring systems.

Responsibilities

• Install and commission solar photovoltaic systems from start to finish.
• Install equipment and liaise with the project supervisor to review plans.
• Ensure builds adhere to design and meet codes and standards.
• Set up solar monitoring system and diagnose faults.
• Assemble racking, seal roof penetrations, install equipment.
• Work on residential, light commercial, and large industrial/IPP projects.
• Coordinate with installation supervisor and engineering to install components.
• Ensure compliance with regulations and safety and quality standards.
• Maintain budget, quality and timely project completion with crew.

Job description

REQUIREMENTS

• Grade 12 Certificate (NQF 4)
• National Diploma in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering (NQF 6)
• QCTO Red Seal Electrician certification
• AREP/ SAPVIA PV Green Card certification (preferred)
• Up to 3 years of solar installation experience (both roof and ground-mount systems)
• Experience with micro and string inverters and setting up monitoring systems
• Computer literacy (MS Office Suite – Advanced Excel)
• Other relevant discipline-specific software programs such as Windows 10, ERP Systems, and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)
• Sound exposure in solar inverter testing (UPS and Rectifier) and PCB replacement
• Knowledge of reading lithium battery BMS data via USB – RS232/ RS 485 comms cable and upload to PC (screen clips and saving data)
• Ability to analyse and mark MS Excel data for BMS alarms and protection events
• Conducting inverter firmware updates

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Installation of solar installations and commissioning the photovoltaic system from beginning to end
• Installation of equipment
• Liaise with the project supervisor: industrial to review project plans and drawings
• Ensures that the project is built according to design
• Set up solar monitoring system
• Diagnose and troubleshoot system malfunctions and operational issues
• Assemble the solar array racking, properly seal all roof penetrations, and install all relevant equipment
• Installations will include residential, light commercial grid-tied photovoltaic systems, as well as large-scale industrial and IPP-scoped project installations
• Report to, coordinate and collaborate with the installation supervisor and engineering department to install all photovoltaic system components

• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and procedures to prevent fruitless, wasteful and irregular expenditure
• Maintain high levels of quality assurance and quality control, with emphasis on safety
• Ensure that all installations meet industry standards and codes.
