About the Role

Our client, a key player in the South African energy transmission sector, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Substation Engineer to join their team in Polokwane, Limpopo. This role is pivotal in the design, construction, and commissioning of high-voltage substations, ensuring the reliable and efficient flow of electricity across the region. You will be responsible for leading substation engineering projects, managing teams, and ensuring compliance with stringent safety and technical standards. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of substation equipment, protection schemes, and power system integration. This position requires a dedicated professional with strong leadership capabilities and a commitment to excellence in energy infrastructure development. Working closely with project management, construction, and operations teams will be essential. We are looking for an engineer with proven experience in substation design and project execution, capable of tackling complex engineering challenges. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design of high-voltage substations, including single-line diagrams, schematics, and equipment layouts.
• Specify and select substation equipment such as power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, and instrument transformers.
• Develop protection and control system designs, including relay settings and logic diagrams.
• Oversee substation projects from conception through to commissioning and handover.
• Ensure designs comply with national and international standards, as well as South African grid codes.
• Collaborate with civil and structural engineers to ensure integrated substation design.
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technical staff.
• Conduct site visits for project supervision, inspections, and troubleshooting.
• Review and approve contractor designs and technical submittals.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in substation engineering, with a focus on high-voltage systems.
• Demonstrated experience in the energy sector, specifically in transmission or distribution infrastructure.
• Proficiency in substation design software and power system analysis tools.
• Thorough knowledge of substation equipment, protection relays, control systems, and grounding principles.
• Experience managing substation projects through their full lifecycle.
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.) registration with ECSA is highly preferred.
• Must be legally eligible to work in South Africa.
