Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, specification, and commissioning of substation projects with high-voltage equipment.

About the Role

Our client, a prominent player in the Energy sector, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Substation Engineer to join their team in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal . This role is integral to the design, development, and maintenance of high-voltage substation infrastructure, ensuring the reliable and efficient transmission of electricity. The successful candidate will lead technical aspects of substation projects, provide expert guidance, and contribute to the strategic development of our power delivery network. Key Responsibilities

Lead the design, specification, and commissioning of substation projects, including high-voltage equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear). Develop detailed engineering drawings, single-line diagrams, protection schemes, and layout plans for substations. Oversee the technical integrity of substation designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards (e.g., IEC, ANSI) and safety regulations. Provide technical expertise and mentorship to junior engineers and project teams. Conduct site inspections, feasibility studies, and risk assessments for substation development and upgrades. Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and external stakeholders to ensure timely and successful project delivery. Troubleshoot complex technical issues related to substation equipment and performance. Manage vendor selection and technical evaluations for substation equipment procurement. Contribute to the development and implementation of substation maintenance strategies and asset management plans. Ensure all engineering activities align with environmental best practices and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. Minimum of 9 years of experience in substation engineering within the Energy industry. Proven expertise in the design, operation, and maintenance of high-voltage substations (e.g., 132kV, 275kV, 400kV). Strong understanding of power system protection, control, and automation principles. Proficiency in substation design software and simulation tools (e.g., AutoCAD, ETAP). Experience with project management methodologies and execution. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities. Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple priorities. Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
