About the Role

Our client, a leading electrical utility provider in South Africa , is looking for a skilled Substation Design Engineer to join their expanding engineering team. This position is based at their central hub in Bloemfontein, Free State . The successful candidate will be responsible for the conceptualization, design, and technical specification of high-voltage electrical substations. This role is critical in ensuring the reliable and efficient transmission and distribution of electricity across the region. You will work on diverse projects, from greenfield developments to the upgrade of existing infrastructure, requiring a strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and substation components. This role requires your presence in Bloemfontein to facilitate close collaboration with site teams and project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop detailed engineering plans for high-voltage electrical substations (up to 400kV).
• Specify equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and protection relays.
• Prepare technical specifications, drawings, and construction documents.
• Conduct site surveys and feasibility studies for new substation projects.
• Ensure designs comply with national and international electrical standards and codes.
• Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and clients to ensure successful project execution.
• Perform power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, and protection coordination.
• Review vendor proposals and technical submittals.
• Provide technical support during the construction, commissioning, and testing phases.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of substation design standards and practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in electrical substation design.
• Proven experience with high-voltage electrical equipment and systems.
• Proficiency in relevant design software such as AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar.
• Solid understanding of power system analysis, protection schemes, and grounding principles.
• Experience with project management and construction liaison.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a dedicated team in our Bloemfontein office.
• Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is highly desirable.
