Placements24 is seeking an experienced Senior Process Safety Engineer for our client in Pretoria, Gauteng. The role focuses on maintaining the highest process safety standards across operations and projects, identifying hazards, and implementing robust safety management systems.

You will lead PHAs, develop PSM programs aligned with international standards, investigate incidents, train staff, and support regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
• 7+ years of process safety experience in chemical, petrochemical, or energy sectors.
• Strong knowledge of PHAs (HAZOP/LOPA/FMEA) and API/NFPA/IEC standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead and conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) including HAZOP, LOPA, and FMEA for new and existing facilities.
• Develop, implement, and maintain Process Safety Management (PSM) systems aligned with international standards.
• Oversee incident investigations, root cause analysis (RCA), and ensure corrective and preventive actions.
• Develop and deliver process safety training programs for engineers, operators, and management.
• Conduct safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and company policies.
• Review engineering designs and P&IDs for new projects to ensure inherent process safety.
• Develop and manage Safety Critical Elements (SCEs) and SIL assessments.
• Advise project teams on process safety and regulatory requirements in energy and chemical processing.
• Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in process safety.

About the Role

Our client, a major player in the chemical and energy industries, is seeking an experienced Senior Process Safety Engineer to join their Pretoria, Gauteng, ZA operations. This pivotal role focuses on ensuring the highest standards of process safety are maintained across all operational and project activities. You will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and mitigating process-related hazards, developing and implementing safety management systems, and fostering a strong safety culture. This role requires a deep understanding of chemical processes, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory compliance within the energy sector. The hybrid work model allows for a blend of strategic planning and hands‑on assessment in the Pretoria region.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOP, LOPA, and FMEA studies for new and existing facilities.
• Develop, implement, and maintain Process Safety Management (PSM) systems in line with international standards (e.g., OSHA PSM, Seveso III).
• Oversee incident investigations, root cause analysis (RCA), and ensure effective implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
• Develop and deliver process safety training programs for engineers, operators, and management.
• Conduct safety audits and inspections of facilities and operations to ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
• Review engineering designs and P&IDs for new projects and modifications to ensure inherent process safety.
• Develop and manage safety critical elements (SCEs) and safety integrity levels (SIL) assessments.
• Advise project teams and operations on process safety aspects, best practices, and regulatory requirements related to energy production and chemical processing.
• Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in process safety engineering.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. A Master's degree or relevant certifications (e.g., CCPSC) are highly advantageous. Minimum of 7 years of experience in process safety engineering, preferably within the chemical, petrochemical, or energy industries. Demonstrated experience in conducting various types of PHAs and leading incident investigations. In-depth knowledge of process safety regulations, codes, and standards (e.g., API, NFPA, IEC 61508/61511). Strong understanding of functional safety, risk assessment techniques, and consequence modeling. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels. Experience with process safety software and tools is desirable. Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment, balancing remote analysis with on-site assessments.
