Job summary

Lusaphops, on behalf of our client in the mining sector, seeks a Senior Mechanical Layout Designer to join a multidisciplinary project delivery team. You will develop plant layouts and 3D models for large mining and mineral processing facilities, ensuring alignment with project requirements and design criteria.

You will lead the layout design effort, mentor junior staff, and coordinate with engineers to deliver accurate drawings, maintain schedules and budgets, and support safety and quality

Qualifications

• Minimum of 10 years of mining/heavy industrial design and layout experience.
• Experience in an EPCM environment is preferred.
• Proficient with design software and related industry standards.
• Strong deliverable focus with ability to meet budgets and schedules.
• Ability to lead small teams and supervise others.
• Understanding of plant processes and interfaces with other disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Produce mechanical layouts, models and drawings per requirements under supervision of the Lead Mechanical Engineer.
• Execute designs in accordance with layout design criteria.
• Understand plant processes and basic mechanical components or systems.
• Interpret PFDs, P&IDs and plant battery limits.
• Develop design details for standard design elements.
• Prepare 3D equipment modeling and 3D design.
• Coordinate draftspersons and monitor contract drawings and record keeping.
• Generate 2D drawings from the 3D model as required by the project.
• Ensure disciplines follow project model/drawing production procedures and guidelines.
• Perform conceptual layout work and check drawings prior to release.
• Use vendor data to develop and verify the model.
• Create and maintain check sheets for equipment and back-model changes.
• Perform clash detection of models with other discipline models.
• Provide material quantity takeoffs for estimating purposes.
• Conduct operability and maintainability reviews; HazOP familiarity is advantageous.
• Understand project mission and user requirements.
• Responsible for budgets, schedule and deliverables related to the layout.
• Provide mentorship and supervision to the design team.
• Provide regular feedback to the Overall Engineering Manager and Mechanical Lead.

Our client in the mining sector is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Layout Designer to join their team to support major mining and infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary project delivery team and play a key role in the development of plant layouts and 3D models for large mining and mineral processing facilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Be responsible to produce mechanical equipment layouts, models, and drawings in accordance with project requirements and under the supervision of the Lead Mechanical Engineer
• Execute designs in accordance with the mechanical and layout design criteria
• Have sound knowledge in the design of project specific mechanical components or systems, as well as fundamental knowledge of plant processes.
• Assist in interpreting the plant PFDs, P&IDs, and plant battery limits and constraints
• Develop design details of standard design elements
• Prepare 3D equipment modeling and 3D design
• Coordinate the work of draftspersons and senior draftspersons in the preparation of contract drawings, record keeping and monitoring
• Generating 2D drawings from the 3D model as required by the project
• Ensure all disciplines are following project model/drawing production procedures and guidelines
• Perform conceptual layout work as well as check drawings prior to release
• Use vendor data, drawings, and information to develop and verify the model
• Create and maintain check sheets for all equipment as vendor data is received. Back model all changes as required.
• Perform clash detection of models with other discipline models
• Provide material quantity takeoffs for estimating purposes or inclusion into bulk commodity purchases and installation contracts
• Conduct operability and maintainability reviews, walkthroughs. Familiarity with HAZOP studies will be an advantage.
• Understanding of project mission including user requirements
• Responsible for managing budgets, schedule and deliverables related to the layout.
• Provide mentorship and supervision to the design team.
• Provide regular feedback to the Overall Engineering Manager and Mechanical Lead on progress with preparation of deliverables.

Requirements

Minimum of 10 years of experience in a mining or heavy industrial design and layout. EPCM environment is preferred.

Design software knowledge.

Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, regulations, and codes pertinent to the design and systems related to the project.

Strong deliverable focus with a proven ability to attain quality and schedule objectives while maintaining budgets.

Able to lead small teams, plan and supervise the work of others.

Understanding of other discipline interfaces and requirements.
