Job summary

Network Finance is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a leading engineering organisation in South Africa's mining sector. You will lead design, analyse, and optimise mining equipment with FEA/DEM, and provide engineering support on site.

The role requires a Pr. Eng registration with ECSA, a B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering, and strong hands-on experience with ANSYS and Rocky DEM, plus mining site exposure.

Job description

A leading engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in FEA, DEM and mining equipment design to join its engineering team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Pr Eng registered Mechanical Engineer who combines advanced design and simulation expertise with practical mining site experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and execute mechanical design projects from concept through to detailed design and implementation.
• Develop and optimise mining equipment and mechanical systems using advanced engineering principles.
• Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations.
• Develop engineering models and simulations using ANSYS and preferably Rocky DEM.
• Analyse structural integrity, loading conditions, stress, deformation, fatigue and equipment performance.
• Translate simulation and analysis results into practical design improvements.
• Produce and review detailed engineering drawings, calculations and technical specifications.
• Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, fabricators and site personnel.
• Conduct site assessments, inspections, troubleshooting and technical investigations.
• Provide engineering support during fabrication, installation, commissioning and operation.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering standards, specifications and safety requirements.
• Prepare and review technical reports, calculations and engineering documentation.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
• Participate in design reviews, risk assessments and project meetings.
• Apply practical mining experience to ensure designs are robust, maintainable and fit for purpose.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Pr Eng registration with ECSA is essential.
• Ideally 28–35 years of age, with the maturity and technical capability required for a senior design position.
• Proven experience specialising in mechanical design and engineering analysis.
• Strong practical experience in FEA and DEM.
• Experience with ANSYS is essential/preferred.
• Experience with Rocky DEM will be highly advantageous.
• Mining industry experience is essential.
• Proven practical site experience within mining, minerals processing or heavy industrial environments.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, loads and structural behaviour.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical communication skills.

Advantageous Experience

• Mining equipment and bulk materials handling experience.
• Conveyors, chutes, crushers, screens, feeders or other heavy mining equipment.
• Structural and fatigue analysis.
• DEM modelling of bulk materials and material flow.
• Equipment optimisation based on simulation results.
• Experience taking designs from concept through fabrication, installation and commissioning.
• Experience working directly with mining clients and site teams.
