Job Purpose

Our client is seeking a Design Engineer with a structural engineering background and relevant industry experience to join their dynamic engineering team. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated and conscientious professional with excellent communication skills and a broad understanding of heavy engineering design, materials handling systems and equipment, and modern 3D modelling and design principles. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and executing engineering design activities, designing mechanical and process plant and installations, and organising and overseeing the assembly and erection of equipment and installations. The role will also involve providing engineering support during installation and maintenance activities, ensuring designs meet relevant engineering standards, specifications and project requirements, collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams, and contributing to the ongoing development and improvement of engineering solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and evaluate conceptual and detailed designs for structures, conveyors and related equipment using 2D and 3D CAD software, including SolidWorks, DraftSight, AutoCAD, ANSYS and Rocky.
  • Provide technical support to sales teams to ensure bid proposals are technically accurate, commercially viable and thoroughly planned and executed.
  • Manage a broad range of major and minor engineering projects, from initial project estimation and tender submission through to contract negotiation and final project design.
  • Conduct research into the feasibility, design, operation and performance of mechanical systems.
  • Document designs, engineering solutions and technical information through detailed drawings and reports.
  • Investigate mechanical failures and unexpected maintenance issues at mine sites across Africa and South Africa.
  • Work closely with engineering teams, sales teams and customers to produce drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs) from sketches, existing drawings, electronic images, and written or verbal specifications.
  • Collaborate with internal departments as required to ensure effective project execution.
  • Design and produce detailed drawings for fabrication components and prepare accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Communicate technical and project-related information effectively to colleagues, customers and suppliers in a professional and constructive manner.
  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor assigned engineering projects, including cost control.
  • Engage and negotiate with sub-vendors throughout all phases of engineering projects.
  • Execute project-specific deliverables in accordance with agreed project requirements and stakeholder expectations.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable engineering codes, standards, practices, QA/QC policies, performance requirements and specifications.
  • Liaise with clients to understand and interpret their specifications, expectations and project requirements.
  • Ensure all engineering work aligns with organisational quality, performance and professional standards.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PrEng) certification.
  • Proven experience working in a project environment.
  • Background in the mining industry and materials handling, particularly run-of-mine crushing, sizing and screening, is highly desirable.
  • Experience with plant and equipment layouts.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing methods, techniques and procedures.
  • Proven experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software, with SolidWorks and AutoCAD skills essential.
  • Experience with FEA software, particularly ANSYS.
  • Experience with DEM software, particularly Rocky.
  • Experience in conveyor design, typically covering systems between 0–200 metres.
  • Proficient in 2D CAD design and drafting, with the ability to use industry-standard CAD systems for design and documentation, including SolidWorks, DraftSight and AutoCAD.
  • Advanced knowledge of:
    • SolidWorks 3D CAD.
    • SolidWorks file and data management.
    • ANSYS.
    • Rocky.Conveyor design codes.
  • Knowledge of standard engineering design codes and specifications.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and technical principles.
