Placements24 is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for its Johannesburg, Gauteng team. The role covers the full product lifecycle from concept to prototyping and production support, with a blend of in-office collaboration and remote flexibility.

You will leverage CAD tools, perform FEA/CFD analyses, and drive manufacturability during prototyping and production stages, collaborating with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to deliver complex mechanical systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 5 years in mechanical design within an industrial/manufacturing setting.
• Proficient in 3D CAD software and PDM systems.
• Strong understanding of materials, stress analysis, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
• Experience with additive manufacturing, CNC machining, and precision casting.
• Excellent problem-solving and meticulous attention to detail.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills; able to work in a team.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

• Conceptualize, design, and develop novel mechanical systems and components using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor).
• Perform detailed engineering analysis, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to validate designs.
• Create comprehensive technical drawings, schematics, and documentation packages for manufacturing and assembly.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing specialists, to ensure seamless project integration.
• Oversee prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical designs, troubleshooting and resolving any issues that arise.
• Provide technical support and guidance to the production team, ensuring designs are manufacturable and meet quality standards.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in mechanical engineering and manufacturing technologies.
• Contribute to project planning, budgeting, and timeline management.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in mechanical design and engineering within an industrial or manufacturing setting.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software and PDM systems.
• Strong understanding of material science, stress analysis, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
• Experience with advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing, CNC machining, and precision casting.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a meticulous attention to detail.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Experience working in or with teams in Johannesburg, Gauteng is advantageous.
