Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Senior Instrumentation & Control Engineer for a hybrid role based in Upington, Northern Cape. You will design, implement, and maintain I&C systems across solar and energy storage projects, leading instrumentation, PLC/DCS, SCADA, and HMI initiatives.

The position requires 7+ years in energy I&C, a relevant engineering degree, and strong problem solving, project leadership, and safety awareness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field with Instrumentation & Control specialization.
• Minimum of 7 years of I&C engineering experience in the energy sector (power generation, oil & gas, renewables).
• Experience with PLC/DCS programming, HMI/SCADA development, and field instrumentation.
• Strong knowledge of process control theory, loop tuning, and automation strategies.
• Experience with functional safety (SIL) assessment is desirable.
• Familiarity with ISA and IEC standards.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
• Effective communication and teamwork in cross-functional teams.
• Experience working in Upington/Northern Cape or similar environments is advantageous.
• Legally eligible to work in South Africa and comfortable with a Hybrid work model.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop I&C systems, including P&IDs, logic diagrams, instrument specs, and control narratives.
• Select instrumentation, control valves, PLCs, DCS, and SCADA systems for energy applications.
• Develop and implement control strategies to optimize performance and safety.
• Oversee installation, calibration, testing, and commissioning of I&C systems.
• Troubleshoot and resolve I&C issues during operation.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards and project specs.
• Collaborate with project management, electrical, mechanical, and operations engineers.
• Manage I&C project budgets, schedules, and vendor relations.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior staff.
• Stay updated on advancements in control systems technology.
