Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer (Substations) to join our client in Randburg, Gauteng. You will design HV substations up to 400 kV, develop layouts, protection schemes, earthing and cable schedules, and perform crucial studies to ensure compliance with national and international standards.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, minimum 6 years’ HV substation design experience, and ECSA registration or eligibility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum 6 years' HV substation design experience.
• ECSA registration or eligibility for registration.

Responsibilities

• Design high-voltage substations (up to 400 kV) including layout, single-line diagrams, and equipment specs.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings and documentation (protection schematics, earthing, cable schedules).
• Perform load flow, short-circuit, and protection coordination studies using relevant software.
• Select and specify substation equipment (transformers, breakers, switchgear, busbars).
• Ensure designs comply with SANS, IEC, IEEE and client specifications.
• Collaborate with project managers, civil engineers, and construction teams to ensure project delivery.
• Support procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
• Assist in tender preparation and proposals for new substations.
