Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a dedicated Senior Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Officer to ensure exemplary safety standards on major mining and energy projects near Polokwane. This role develops, implements, and oversees comprehensive HSE programs to prevent accidents, protect the environment, and ensure regulatory compliance across all project sites.

You will work closely with project management, site personnel, and regulatory authorities to foster a robust safety culture and mitigate risks

Qualifications

• 6+ years of progressive HSE experience, preferably in mining or energy construction.
• Knowledge of SA OHS Act, MHSA, and environmental law.
• Certifications such as SAMTRAC or NOSHES.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a dedicated Senior Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Officer to ensure exemplary safety standards on major mining and energy projects located near Polokwane . This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive HSE programs designed to prevent accidents, protect the environment, and ensure regulatory compliance across all project sites. You will work closely with project management, site personnel, and regulatory authorities to foster a robust safety culture and mitigate risks associated with complex industrial operations. Your expertise will be vital in safeguarding our workforce and the environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement project-specific HSE management systems and procedures in line with company policy and legal requirements.
• Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
• Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, conducting root cause analyses and recommending corrective actions.
• Develop and deliver HSE training programs to site personnel, contractors, and management.
• Monitor environmental performance and ensure adherence to environmental permits and regulations.
• Liaise with regulatory bodies, clients, and stakeholders on all HSE-related matters.

Requirements

• National Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Health, Safety, and Environmental Management or a related field.
• Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in HSE management, preferably within the mining or energy construction sector .
• In-depth knowledge of South African OHS Act, Mine Health and Safety Act, and environmental legislation.
• Experience in conducting risk assessments, developing safe work procedures, and managing emergency response plans.
• Strong communication, leadership, and influencing skills.
• Relevant certifications such as SAMTRAC, NOSHES, or equivalent are required.
