Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Geologist for an open-pit mining operation in Midrand, Gauteng. You will lead geological mapping, resource modeling, and risk assessment to optimize mine design and production scheduling.

The role requires 7+ years in mineral exploration/mining geology, proficiency with Leapfrog or Vulcan, and strong communication. Travel to site and mentoring junior geologists are part of the role; a Bachelor's or Master's in Geology is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geology or related Earth Science.
• Minimum 7 years' experience in mineral exploration and mining geology, with a focus on open-pit operations.
• Proficiency in geological modelling and resource estimation software.
• Experience with geological data management systems.
• Strong understanding of geological controls on mineralization for various commodities.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving and data interpretation skills.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly within a team.
• Willingness to travel to mine sites and hold a valid driver’s license.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed geological mapping and core logging to define ore bodies and assess mineralization.
• Develop and maintain accurate 3D geological models using Leapfrog or Vulcan.
• Perform resource estimation and volumetric calculations to international standards (JORC/SAMREC).
• Collaborate with mine planning engineers to optimize design and production scheduling.
• Oversee drilling programs ensuring objectives and data quality are met.
• Conduct geological risk assessments and advise on mitigation strategies.
• Prepare geological reports and presentations for management and stakeholders.
• Mentor and guide junior geologists and field technicians.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations on site.
