About the Role

Our client, an exploration-focused Oil & Gas company, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Geologist specializing in Basin Analysis to join their established team in Benoni, Gauteng. This role is critical for understanding and evaluating the petroleum systems within various geological basins relevant to our client's exploration portfolio. You will be responsible for integrating diverse geological and geophysical data to assess prospectivity, de-risk plays, and contribute to strategic exploration planning. This is an office-based position requiring deep technical expertise in regional geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, and structural analysis. The successful candidate will play a key role in guiding exploration efforts by providing robust geological insights derived from comprehensive basin studies within the Oil & Gas sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed basin analysis, including tectonic, stratigraphic, and sedimentological assessments.
• Integrate and interpret multidisciplinary data sets: seismic, well logs, core data, gravity, magnetics, and geochemical data.
• Evaluate petroleum systems, including source rock potential, reservoir distribution, seal integrity, and trap configuration.
• Identify, map, and characterize exploration prospects and plays within target basins.
• Perform risk assessments and quantify uncertainties associated with exploration ventures.
• Develop conceptual geological models to guide exploration strategies and drilling decisions.
• Collaborate closely with geophysicists, reservoir engineers, and exploration managers.
• Prepare comprehensive geological reports, prospect evaluations, and presentations for management and joint venture partners.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in basin analysis techniques and Oil & Gas exploration technologies.
• Mentor junior geologists and contribute to the technical development of the exploration team.

Requirements

• Master's degree or PhD in Geology, Petroleum Geology, or a related geoscience discipline.
• Minimum of 9 years of experience in petroleum exploration geology, with a strong emphasis on basin analysis and petroleum systems evaluation.
• Proven expertise in integrating and interpreting diverse geological and geophysical data.
• Strong understanding of plate tectonics, sedimentary basin evolution, and structural geology.
• Proficiency in relevant geological software and interpretation tools (e.g., Petrel, Kingdom Suite, GIS software).
• Demonstrated ability to develop and present complex geological concepts clearly and concisely.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
• Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
• Experience working within the Oil & Gas industry is essential.
• Familiarity with South African geology and exploration history is an advantage.
