Placements24 is seeking a Senior Energy Law Consultant for a contract-based role with extensive remote flexibility across South Africa. You will provide expert legal and strategic guidance on complex energy projects, regulatory compliance, and contractual matters in the renewable energy, oil, and gas sectors.

The ideal candidate has a law degree (LLB) with Attorney/Advocate admission and at least 10 years of energy law experience, including SA legislation like EA 2008 and NERSA regulations, plus

Qualifications

• LLB degree with admission as an Attorney or Advocate.
• Min 10 years in energy law (regulatory and transactional).
• Proven expertise in SA energy legislation (EA 2008, NERSA regs).
• Experience with renewable energy projects and/or traditional energy sectors.
• Strong understanding of energy market structures and commercial frameworks.
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, and client advisory skills.
• Ability to work independently and deliver remotely.
• Exceptional report writing and presentation skills.
• Strong professional energy industry network is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal and strategic advice on energy projects, including regulatory approvals, licensing, and compliance.
• Draft, review, and negotiate energy-related contracts (PPAs, EPCs, JV agreements).
• Advise clients on energy policy, market reforms, and legislative changes.
• Conduct legal due diligence for energy sector investments and transactions.
• Support clients in interactions with regulatory bodies and government agencies.
• Develop risk mitigation strategies for energy projects.
• Assist in dispute resolution related to energy contracts and regulatory matters.
• Stay current with international best practices and global energy market trends.
• Contribute to thought leadership and business development within the energy practice.
