Job summary

Placements24 in Sandton, Gauteng seeks an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to design robust power systems for generation, transmission and distribution. You will conduct system studies, prepare detailed designs, select equipment, and ensure compliance with IEC/SANS/IEEE standards while supporting construction and commissioning.

The role requires a minimum of 6 years in power systems design, strong analytical skills, and proficiency with PSS/E, ETAP or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Power Systems.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in electrical power systems design.
• Proficient in power system analysis software (PSS/E, ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory).
• Strong understanding of protection schemes and relay settings.
• Knowledge of South African electrical codes and regulations.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a project team.
• Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration is highly advantageous.
• Experience working in Sandton or the broader Gauteng province is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop electrical systems for power generation, transmission, and distribution.
• Conduct power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, transient stability, and protection coordination analysis.
• Prepare detailed electrical designs, specifications, single-line diagrams, and schematics.
• Select appropriate electrical equipment, such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, and cables.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards (IEC, SANS, IEEE) and project requirements.
• Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, project managers, and clients to ensure project success.
• Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, and operational phases of projects.
• Perform site visits for inspections, surveys, and to resolve engineering issues.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the development of design best practices.
• Review and approve vendor documentation and equipment submittals.
